Not sure how effective IPL hair removal is, and wondering how much it is going to cost you? IPL hair removal, or Intense Pulsed Light hair removal, is an effective technique for permanent hair removal and is suitable for all skin and hair types when using high quality, professional equipment. However, your skin type, the amount and thickness of your hair and the treatment area size will all have an effect on how many sessions you will need and the overall cost of the treatment. What IPL hair removal treatment involves; a step-by-step

Step 1: Consultation and patch test

Firstly, if you have been looking into IPL hair removal and are looking to get started, the Specialist will need to conduct a consultation with you. This is to chat through the treatment, establish the treatment area, discuss how many sessions you may need and what the costing would be.

Depending on how your body takes to the treatment, you may need more or fewer treatments than estimated. Most importantly, we conduct a patch test to make sure the treatment is right for you, and that there are no adverse reactions. This is similar to the patch tests conducted when you have your hair coloured, for example. The Specialist will also discuss any reservations you may have, and answer any questions on the treatment. This service with us is complimentary, so you can decide if the treatment is right for you before having to make any financial commitment, although in some clinics this could cost anything from £10-£30.

Step 2: IPL hair removal treatment session

Your Specialist will clean the area being treated, and then apply a cool gel to your skin. The gel is used to protect your skin from any damage and make the treatment more comfortable for you. Then the Specialist will use the IPL machine to apply light pulses onto the treatment area. The light pulses may sting slightly, especially in sensitive areas. Many liken it to the ping of an elastic band. The cooling gel should alleviate this sensation for you. The treatment can take around 20-30 minutes. This depends on the area you plan to treat.

Step 3: What to expect afterwards

Your Specialist will advise you on a few things to make sure you have the maximum result for your treatment, and that your skin is protected from damage. Firstly, you should avoid direct sunlight and if you are, be sure to wear a good SPF. Tanning beds should be avoided, and waxing the area is a no-no. Follow-up treatments should be spaced around one month apart, to ensure your skin is full repaired and that there is no damage to the skin.

IPL hair removal has no downtime, so you should be able to go right back to normal after your sessions. It is popular with our clients to have a session during their lunch break or in between a busy schedule! Your skin may be red and sensitive for a few hours, or may be slightly swollen. This may be the case for a good few days after the treatment but should settle down well after that.

How many sessions of IPL hair removal will I need?

As I’ve mentioned, the number of sessions can vary depending on the area being treated (for example, hair removal on the legs may take quite a few more sessions than your centre brows or upper lip). This is because there is just more area to cover and so it may take longer to achieve the desired results.

Another factor could affect the amount of sessions you may need is the thickness and type of hair that you would like removed. The more hair you have on the treatment area, the more sessions that may be required to ensure all of the follicles have been treated.

How much does IPL hair removal cost?

Prices can vary depending on the quality of the IPL machine being used, the area being treated and the number of sessions required. Many clinics or salons will provide you with a quote for a single session, or for block bookings, and some salons will provide “full-body” hair removal sessions for discounted prices. A lot of the time, the information can be difficult to find, or not provided to you at all online until you go in for a consultation with a salon.
