It’s the 10-year anniversary of Shanti Wellness Day Spa. Owner Mary Fortune thinks that just as new services provided will leave clients feeling rejuvenated, the business name should as well.
The new name for the business going forward is Shanti Rejuvenation Center. Fortune is also the esthetician and licensed laser technician. Some of the services offered are acupuncture, full body light therapy using the JOOVV, and the infrared sauna.
The acupuncture service will be provided by Garrett L. Riedmann, L. Ac., who has a Master of Science Degree in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.
Light therapy services, such as the JOOVV, which provides full- body light therapy, is available. Light therapy is great for a person’s overall health, maintenance, and recovery, according to Fortune. She said by standing in front of the JOOVV for 10 minutes on one side and 10 minutes on the opposite side with skin exposed, people can increase the mitochondria in the cells of the body. The mitrochondria provide the energy within each cells and can easily get depleted from disease, aging, or injury, she said.
The JOOVV helps to heal and provides maintenance at a root level with improvements in areas such as muscle recovery, joint pain, arthritis, skin health, and relaxation and sleep, added Fortune.
The business also offers an infrared sauna. The difference between the JOOVV and the Infrared sauna, are that they use two different wave lengths of light during treatments. The sauna uses infrared lighting and will create heat inside of the body, which causes one to sweat, unlike the JOOVV which might feel a little warm, but to a lesser degree than the sauna. The sauna provides detoxing, which allows the body to sweat out impurities and it loosens up muscles, according to Fortune.
Fortune went to esthetician school in order to operate a skin rejuvenation laser. She’s always been fascinated with light, and its different wave lengths and colors, which contained healing properties. Not all light or sunlight damages your skin, in fact people need to be outside for 15 minutes per day to increase the amount of Vitamin D within their bodies, which helps with preventing cancer and provides pro-health benefits, said Fortune.
“I definitely enjoy teaching, being an esthetician and wellness coach, not the administration or marketing aspects of the business, which can take me away from the technician and instructor side of things,” said Fortune. She obtained her esthetician license in 2005 after a long career of being a wellness consultant and personal fitness trainer.
When she first opened Shanti, she had the intention of offering more than just the esthetic services, and wanted it to be a wellness center.
The level of services have changed greatly. What started with basic esthetic services, like massage, nails, and facials, has grown to include more high-tech treatments such as the laser and skin rejuvenation, hair removal services, Venus freeze which uses radio frequency skin tightening, and RF Microneedling, using radio frequency for skin rejuvenation. Shanti still provides fitness classes such as Yoga and Pilates in the fitness room.
Fortune said the JOOVV is great for athletic performance and injury recovery, with some NFL players, such as All-Pro Defensive Back Patrick Peterson even endorsing its benefits.
“I have always been a big believer in integrative medicine and wanted to bring that to Webster City,” said Fortune. “I became certified in wellness coaching through Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, which allows me to provide one-on-one care with clients who are interested in finding the root cause of their problems and then design a plan to help with the healing process through diet, exercise, and nutrition.”
Fortune tries to help patients treat the cause of their health issues, instead of just treating the symptoms like most western medicinal prescriptions would do. By using functional medicines, such as herbs, supplements, and food to treat underlying issues, such as poor gut health, Fortune is offering an alternative route with integrative medicinal practices. Any results garnered from a consultation with Fortune can be taken to the client’s primary care physician for a prescription if they see fit to do so.
The new business name has already taken affect, but will be officially commemorated on Thursday, Oct. 25 during Webster City’s Ladies Night Out festivities. Fortune will serve food and wine and will have door prizes such as baskets of body or skin care products or gift certificates. The acupuncturist also will be available to provide mini treatments to demonstrate what the needles will actually feel like.
