What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser hair removal is a non-invasive procedure that uses concentrated beams of light to target and destroy hair follicles, preventing future hair growth. It's an effective, long-term solution to reduce unwanted hair on various parts of the body, including the bikini area, arms, legs, back, and face.
Why is it Important to Have Your Laser Hair Removal at a Dermatology Office?
Having laser hair removal done in a dermatology office ensures that the treatment settings are appropriately set by a board-certified dermatologist. Board-certified dermatologists are uniquely qualified to supervise laser hair removal due to their extensive medical training in skin anatomy and conditions. They understand the complexities of different skin types, hair types, and pigmentation, allowing them to customize treatments safely and effectively. Dermatologists are also equipped to handle any potential complications, such as burns or pigmentation changes, ensuring that treatments are both safe and effective. Their expertise ensures that patients receive the highest standard of care, minimizing risks and maximizing results.
At The Dermatology and Laser Group all laser hair removal is directly supervised by board-certified dermatologist and laser expert Arash Akhavan, MD.
How to Prepare for Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment
To prepare for your laser hair removal appointment you should shave the treatment area the night before your session but avoid waxing, plucking, or threading, as these methods remove the hair follicle, which is necessary for the laser to work effectively. Arrive with clean, product-free skin for optimal results. Please note that we are unable to treat skin that is sunburned or has an active infection. We also do not perform laser hair removal on patients who are pregnant.
What to Expect During Laser Hair Removal
During the procedure, a handheld laser device is used to deliver targeted beams of light to the hair follicles. You may feel a mild snapping sensation as the laser pulses. Cooling mechanisms or suction devices are used to minimize discomfort. Depending on the size of the treatment area, sessions typically last between 15 to 60 minutes.
What to Expect After Laser Hair Removal
After treatment, you may experience some redness or mild swelling, similar to a mild sunburn. These effects typically subside within a few hours to a day. Over the next few weeks, the treated hairs will gradually fall out. Multiple sessions are necessary for optimal results, as hair grows in cycles, and the laser is only effective against the small subset of hairs that are actively growing at the time of each session.
