About Laser Hair Removal
Just about your entire body is covered with hair. For women, most of the hair is fine, and pale, not usually visible to the naked eye. For some women, the hair is darker and coarser in places we don’t like or expect-like on the face, neck, abdomen, breasts, or arms. These areas may prevent us from wearing the clothes we enjoy or participating in certain activities such as swimming.
Laser hair removal is a great option for men as well. Shaving or trimming your facial hair may be a regular grooming habit but excess hair on your back, shoulders, around the ears, or between the eyebrows seems to grow back faster than you can pluck or shave. Regular shaving of body hair becomes a tedious chore. Hair has no vital function in humans yet its psychological importance is enormous. In cases like these, it may be time to consider permanent hair reduction.
Initially, the hair should be trimmed or shaved for the area to be treated. Then a thin coat of clear cold gel is then lightly smoothed over the skin and laser pulses are directed at the hair bulbs.
How does laser hair removal work?
IPL works best at removing hair when it’s in the active growth phase. But not all the hair in the treatment area will be in this phase at any given time. So we spread our IPL treatments out over a period of time. This is to make sure that hair that isn’t treated in one session is affected in the next. The way hair grows is slightly different for everyone, so we tailor our treatment to suit you.
Will I need more than one treatment session?
Commonly, six to eight treatment sessions are needed to provide a permanent reduction of hair growth. This is because at any given time some of the follicles in the treatment area won’t be in the growth phase. We spread our treatments out to make sure that hair that isn’t treated in one session is affected in the next. Facial hair tends to be more stubborn and may need ten to twelve treatment sessions or occasionally more in very resistant cases.
The gap between sessions is usually four weeks for facial areas and six weeks for body areas. The number of hair removal sessions depends on various factors, including where the hair is, how thick it is and also your particular skin type and hair color. For the best results, we recommend that you complete the full series of treatment sessions.
After the procedure
For the first few days after your treatment, you should apply aloe vera gel to soothe the affected area. Also, a sun-cream of at least SPF30 should be applied to exposed treated areas every day for at least four weeks, regardless of the weather.
Are there any risks?
There may be some redness and swelling after the treatment but this usually only lasts one or two days. Sometimes there can be an increase or loss of pigmentation (colouring) in the skin. In a very small number of cases, the skin’s texture may change slightly. IPL very rarely causes scarring.
Side effects are rare. Most individuals experience no more than a slight sting or pinch as the laser pulses are applied. Some parts of the body do tend to be more sensitive than others and sometimes redness occurs for a few hours afterward.
