Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is an innovative cosmetic procedure this uses a device with microscopic, shallow needles that create micro-injuries to the surface of the skin. These tears, or micro-injuries, trigger the skin’s natural collagen production, promoting smoother, softer, and more youthful-looking skin. Microneedling can address a number of different skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne or surgical scars, skin pigmentation, and enlarged pores.
Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Armijo offers microneedling at his fully accredited medical facility, ensuring safe, comfortable treatments. Microneedling Pre-Treatment Instructions
Following the right pre-treatment instructions ensures that your treatment will go smoothly and deliver the results you’re after.
- Avoid Accutane six months prior to beginning your treatment sessions
- Stop using any topical agents that may increase skin sensitivity, such as retinoids, harsh exfoliants, topical antibiotics, or acids, at least a week before your treatment
- Do not take anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, Motrin, or Advil, for at least three days prior to your sessions. These can interfere with the natural inflammatory process and cause excess bleeding.
- Avoid IPL/laser procedures, unprotected sun exposure, or sunburn for at least 2 weeks prior to your procedure
- Postpone all waxing, laser, hair removal creams, or electrolysis to the area being treated for at least a week prior to your session
- Do not shave the day of your procedure to avoid excess skin irritation
- If you’re prone to cold sores, ask your doctor for an antiviral agent, and take it 2 days prior to your session and the day of your treatment
Microneedling Post-Treatment Instructions
As with any cosmetic treatment, it’s important to follow the post-care instructions given to you by your doctor to ensure the best possible results. Your skin will be vulnerable and sensitive after microneedling, so it’s important to follow these instructions carefully.
- Do not take any anti-inflammatory medications for one week after your procedure
- Do not use ice on your face and avoid using arnica/bromelain to reduce any bruising or swelling. These can interfere with the natural inflammatory process that’s critical for your skin’s rejuvenation.
- Avoid tanning and prolonged exposure to direct sunlight for at least 2 weeks. Then always wear a 30 SPF or higher sunblock
- Wash your skin with a gentle cleanser and pat your skin dry
- Do not pick, scratch, or peel any scabs that might form over the treatment areas—let them fall away and heal naturally
- Do not apply heavy or thick creams to the treatment area to avoid clogging your pores
- Keep your skin moisturized at all times. Talk to your doctor about which products are the best to use after microneedling
