And sure, while you can use most types of methods on multiple parts of the body, some of them just work better on a select few. It’s also important to know, the method you use also just depends on, well, you: If you’re willing to splurge and just want the best possible results, your best bet would be to get laser hair removal. If your hair grows fast or you’re a total baby about pain, good ol’ fashioned shaving fits the bill. Or maybe you just it all gone as fast as possible?
A depilatory cream might be your best bet.
To find out more, we spoke to Nair Ambassador and Founder of Daniela Costa Brows & Beauty, Daniela Costa for her best tips.
Preparation
“Preparation is key when it comes to at-home hair removal. I recommend removing dead skin build-up by exfoliating 24 to 48 hours prior to any hair removal. Exfoliating your skin prior to hair removal will ensure that the buildup of dead skin cells is reduced, and allow any ingrown hairs to come through and be more easily picked up by wax, cream or tweezers,” explains Daniela.
“Exfoliating your skin is as simple as using a body scrub, such as the Ginger & Me Sugar Scrub, or an exfoliator such as Elle Effect Exfoliating Mitt.”
- Exfoliate
“Certain products such as the Nair Leg Mask with 100% Natural Clay and Charcoal, already contain natural exfoliants so you can skip this step unless you have stubborn ingrown hairs.
“However, if you have sensitive skin – please be mindful that exfoliating prior to at-home hair removal may be too abrasive, so always check your product for key ingredients and directions!”
- Hydrate
“Whatever form of hair removal you choose, you should also always keep your body hydrated with a moisturiser to keep your skin feeling smoother and more nourished for longer. That is, except on removal day. You should keep the area clean and free of any moisturiser.”
- Test
“Patch testing is a crucial step when using a new product. It’s important to test a hidden body area when patch testing, such as behind your knee or elbow. If there’s no reaction within 24 hours, you may also want to apply it behind the ear and assess how the product will perform on your face before applying all over.”
Face
“If you’re using a hair removal cream for any part of your face, it’s important to look out for a cream that is specially formulated for this part of the body such as the Nair Sensitive Precision Hair Removal Cream. And don’t forget to follow up with SPF before sun exposure! You can also find mini wax strips that can be applied around the curves of your upper lip and eyebrow, such as the Nair Soft Natural Mini Strips.
“If you have sensitive skin, I’d recommend sticking to tweezing and threading for eyebrows or using depilatory creams and dermaplaning to remove peach fuzz from your face. Tweezerman Tweezers are great for precision tweezing when removing those tricky individual hairs due to its slanted head. Dermaplaning is also an easy solution for removing dead skin and hair on your face. Personally, I love the Finishing Touch Flawless Dermaplane Glow, it has precise and gentle blades and is ideal for sensitive skin.”
Underarms & Bikini
“Both creams and waxes are great for sensitive areas, however, a hot wax tub is effective for both removing hair and soothing the skin. Hot waxes are specially designed for delicate regions such as the underarms and bikini line. It’s also important to note, while there are products designed to be used on the bikini line, I do not recommend anyone attempt a brazillian wax on themselves – please consult a professional if you’re after this hair removal treatment.“
Body
“For larger areas of your body (arms, legs, back or chest) try a strip wax or depilatory cream. If you have sensitive skin, try to look for products with soothing ingredients such as zinc oxide, chamomile and tea tree, as well as oils such as argan, coconut and almond. Products with these ingredients, such as the new Nair Soft Natural Large Wax Strips, will not only ensure effective hair removal, but will also be soothing on the skin and minimise inflammation. If you have a low pain threshold, I would recommend the Nair Sensitive Hair Removal Shower Cream with Coconut Oil.”
Post-treatment care
“It’s important to give our skin a little extra TLC after any hair removal treatments. I would suggest avoiding super hot water for 24 hours to give your pores the chance to close. Moisturising is also vital after hair removal, try to look for topical lotions with ingredients such as Aloe Vera and Tea Tree, such as this Body Shop Aloe Soothing Day Cream. These actively work to heal your skin with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Remember to avoid sun exposure after any hair removal treatment. If you can’t avoid the sunshine – be sure to apply SPF generously!”
