Hair removal is a pain…and quite literally that is. This monthly beauty task (weekly for some unfortunate souls) needs time, courage and patience and is followed by a few repetitions of ‘why, god why’? No matter how much you procrastinate, you have to get that pesky hair off your skin so you can flaunt your skirts and short dresses.
That being said, there has been a debate going on regarding the best hair removal method. Is it waxing or is it shaving that you should opt for to get rid of unwanted hair? So we decided to settle it once and for all. Here is the difference between waxing and shaving and which one is actually better for you.
- Waxing
- Shaving
- Our verdict
Waxing
Although mind-numbingly painful, waxing is one of the most common ways of hair removal. Wax is applied on the skin in the direction of hair growth and peeled off with the help of paper or cloth strips. The wax used is warm and made of sugar, beeswax or chocolate and thus is super sticky which makes it easy for hair to stick on it and peel off in one quick motion. It is long-lasting and you can wait up to four to six weeks between waxes. The cons of waxing are that you may have burns, irritation and redness but don’t worry, they go away in a while. Also, your hair needs to be at least a quarter-inch long for it to hold the wax.
Shaving
Shaving is not a root removal method which means rather than removing hair from roots, it cuts off the hair right above the surface of the skin. For shaving, you need trimmers or razors, which could be electric and manual. This method is quick and painless and you could do it in your home; it hardly takes 10 minutes to get smooth skin with the use of razors. The downside is that your hair grows back in a couple of days and the stubble makes your skin look darker.
Our verdict
Waxing is a semi-permanent hair removal method that removes hair from roots and leaves your skin smooth and hairless longer than shaving does. Although shaving is quick and pain-free (that’s a bonus), it leads to coarse, prickly hair in a matter of days and you may experience redness, itching and rash, especially if you have sensitive skin. Waxing is better if you want a long-lasting and safer method for hair removal and we would suggest saving your razors for small touch-ups for when you have absolutely no time to hit the salon for a waxing session.
