The Pros and Cons of Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning Skin Care Treatment Vancouver | SKN Clinic
Dermaplaning Skin Care Treatment Vancouver | SKN Clinic

Dermaplaning is a highly sought-after skincare procedure that involves using a sterile surgical scalpel to manually and gently remove the dead outer layer of the skin and fine vellus hairs found on the face, which contribute to dull skin. Dermaplaning also includes high doses of skin nutrients and enzyme treatments.

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment that removes the barriers that would stop your skincare products from penetrating the skin. The treatment leaves the skin ultra-smooth, supple, fresh, and radiant. The procedure also evens out the skin, stimulates new skin development, and helps with cell metabolism.

But is dermaplaning a skin treatment worth trying? Our article discusses the pros and cons of the treatment.

Pros of dermaplaning

The following are the pros of a dermaplaning treatment.

  1. It’s fast
The procedure takes as little as 10 minutes to a maximum of about 30 minutes to complete. This means that you can walk into a skin clinic during your lunch break from work and have a session. After one session, you can enjoy smooth and radiant skin for up to 30 days.
  2. It’s painless
Although the skin specialist will be using a scalpel, they will only be making minor movements with it. Compared to shaving that can be painful and cause irritation, you will feel like someone is gently and lightly scratching your face during the procedure. There is no pain associated with the treatment.
  3. It doesn’t require any downtime
When done correctly, dermaplaning doesn’t require any downtime, and you will see immediate results. This means you can enjoy your skin’s new glow, radiance, and overall improved appearance right after the procedure is done.
  4. It does not involve the use of chemicals
It is unlikely that you will experience adverse reactions to dermaplaning because the treatment doesn’t use chemicals. Your skin specialist will only use a surgical scalpel to scrape away the dead outer layer of the skin using gentle motions based on the treatment area. The size of the blade also allows your skin specialist to target specific regions of the face with much less effort than other skin treatments.
  5. It has minimal side effects
After a dermaplaning session, you might notice slight redness of the skin. This redness should fade within a couple of hours unless your face is exposed to the sun. However, there is a risk for other side effects if the procedure is not done correctly by a trained professional.

Cons of dermaplaning

The following are the cons of a dermaplaning treatment.

  1. It’s not suitable for everyone
Dermaplaning isn’t appropriate for anyone suffering from active acne or other painful skin conditions. This is because their skin can easily become sore and irritated when it comes into contact with the scalpel.
  2. It can be unsafe if not performed by a licensed professional
If the procedure isn’t done correctly or the right instrument isn’t used, there’s a risk of cuts on the skin. Cuts put you at risk of various infections. If you’re choosing to have the treatment performed, go to a licensed skin care professional.
  3. It provides short-term results
Unlike other cosmetic procedures like laser hair removal and waxing that remove hair from the root, dermaplaning only removes fine hair from the surface of the face. As a result, the benefits of the treatment will only last until the vellus hair grows back. This will generally take about four weeks. For consistent results, you will need to have regular dermaplaning treatment.

Collagen Activator Peel & The Power of Dermal Remodelling | SKN Skin Clinic Vancouver

This month’s feature treatment is all about “Dermal Remodelling” – which we feel is the key to youthful skin. Treating this living layer with potent antioxidants, vitamins, peptides and growth factors leads to a healthy, collagen-rich, thick, dermis. A thinning dermis leads to loss of elasticity, firmness, the appearance of redness, and broken capillaries. A thick, healthy dermis presents as healthy, firm, collagen-rich, skin, that is more even in tone and texture.

Dermal remodelling results in long-term results because it actually causes your skin to behave healthier and more youthful.

The Collagen Activation Peel merges our Vitamin A Infusion Peel with Nano Pen Technology and high-performance skin ingredients to remodel, and regenerate your dermal layer. This concentrated booster blend activates the production of collagen while repairing, restoring and strengthening your skin.

What you do every day is of the utmost importance

We highly recommend using a Retinaldehyde-based serum every 2nd or 3rd night to maintain a healthy dermal layer. The Empowered Collagen Revival Serum is perfect for those with normal, aging skin and Harmonized Clarifying Serum is great for those prone to breakouts and more oily skin.

A healthy dermal layer is a key to healthy, long-living skin

*The peeling experienced from this treatment can range from no peeling to very moderate peeling that can occur 2-3 days post-treatment and last up to 7 days. However, the true benefits of this treatment are happening deep in the dermal layer – dermal remodelling, beyond what you can see with the visible eye so the peeling does not determine the benefits you receive.

Coffee Enemas: The Wellness Ritual You Could Be Missing | SKN Skin Clinic Vancouver
Coffee Enemas: The Wellness Ritual You Could Be Missing | SKN Skin Clinic Vancouver

Coffee enemas can be a powerful and useful tool to fast track our health and detoxification pathways. I was like most people for a long time, skeptical and a little nervous about the idea. However, I believe we learn a lot about our bodies and what works for us individually this way. When I first started implementing them in my wellness routine, I was amazed how cleansed and refreshed I felt, and how quickly it helped with any digestive issues, skin problems, and mental or physical stress.

A coffee enema is a type of colon cleansing using coffee and water via a tube and bucket. It works as a mechanical cleansing method to remove toxins and waste from the colon by stimulating movement through peristalsis and enhancing bile flow. They have been around as far back as the 1800’s and have been used by the famous Gerson Therapy as part of natural cancer treatments. Coffee enemas provides many benefits for the body that I will discuss below.

Coffee Enemas provide many benefits such as:

  1. Liver Health & Detoxification – coffee enemas help remove unwanted materials and toxins in the gut and bloodstream. Since they mechanically wash out the colon, this removes harmful parasites, bacteria, yeast, and heavy metals that contribute to inflammation, and disease. Our liver and detoxification pathways become burdened when there are excess toxins built up in our bodies, therefore coffee enemas can provide relief for our liver to work its best. Coffee used in an enema stimulates glutathione production in the liver by up to 600-700%, which is known as the body’s master antioxidant and critical for detoxification.
  2. Relieves Constipation & Other Digestive Issues – coffee enemas provide constipation relief in many ways. Both water in the colon and coffee stimulate peristalsis which causes movement through the colon. Both toxins and food residue can cause constipation, and therefore, coffee enemas help facilitate removal of waste and toxins. Chronic constipation can cause a variety of health issues such as hormone imbalances, skin problems, and anxiety. Coffee is also beneficial for diverticulitis in the colon, which are slight tears in the walls where food particles and bacteria become trapped. Diverticulitis can cause symptoms such as bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and pain in the abdomen. Enemas can also help with inflammation, bloating, and water retention, and some people notice flatter stomachs or a slight reduction in weight due to this.
  3. Clear Candida and Parasites – candida and parasites can contribute to many unwanted health conditions such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, bloating, rashes, fatigue, yeast infections, bladder infections, food sensitivities, weight loss or gain, and joint pain. Coffee enemas enhance bile flow increasing alkalinity in the small intestine making it less hospitable for parasites and yeast. If you’ve ever dealt with parasites or candida, you know how unfortunate the symptoms they can cause and how difficult they feel to get rid of. Incorporating coffee enemas if you’re dealing with either of these pathogens can further support a detox protocol.
  4. Heals Skin Conditions & Anti-Aging – skin conditions can be related to the inability to remove toxins properly. Enemas help by removing toxins through improving elimination channels, especially when a person’s digestion/gut is struggling. When elimination channels are blocked or not optimal, this increases the risk for skin conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Coffee enemas also have antioxidant effects as they increase glutathione production. Glutathione can reduce free radicals that contribute to liver health, and therefore, contributes to anti-aging and clearer skin.

How to do a coffee enema:

To do a coffee enema you will need an enema bucket (can be purchased online or at a health food store), certified organic ground coffee, filtered or spring water, and sea salt. To brew an enema you will need to boil 3 heaping tablespoons of the organic coffee with 3 cups of water for about 20 minutes. Once the coffee is ready, strain the liquid into the enema bucket. Fill the rest of the bucket with filtered water and about ¼ tsp. of sea salt. It’s important to allow it to cool to a lukewarm temperature. Use a lubricant such as coconut oil or natural lotion to coat the enema nozzle. Lie on your left side and insert the nozzle into your rectum about 1 inch inside. Let the valve go to start the flow of the coffee to enter the colon. Once the bucket has emptied, hold the liquid inside for about 12 to 15 minutes and then release and go to the bathroom.

There are also other forms of enemas out there, and they have slightly different benefits. For those sensitive to caffeine, the caffeine from coffee enemas is only about 25% absorbed in comparison to drinking coffee. Coffee enemas help to reduce stress in the body as well, but you could always try other forms if you’re worried about the caffeine content. Lemon enemas are also great, but I don’t recommend starting with them at first. Enemas are best performed in a meditative state, it’s important to allow your mind and body to relax during the process to receive the most benefits. By being in a calm meditative state, you will feel both your mind and body feel cleansed and refreshed afterwards. Many people even use enemas not just for the physical health benefits but also for spiritual purposes.

I believe coffee enemas are most beneficial for our health when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle. They are not for everyone and it’s important to always listen to your body and speak with your healthcare practitioner to see if they could benefit you. Additionally, it is very important to replenish with electrolytes afterwards such as sodium, potassium, and magnesium and hydrate with enough water or healthy liquids.
