The 5 Most Used Hair Removal Methods Compared by 40 Beauty Experts

Let’s face it, we all struggle to remove body hair. Methods like waxing, sugaring, and threading are fairly painful and best done by a skillful professional, while methods like shaving or using depilatory creams require frequent repeat treatments.

Laser hair removal, on the other hand, is semi-permanent and therefore considered to be the most effective hair removal method, but it’s also the most expensive method.

Because of these different advantages and disadvantages, we reached out to 40 beauty experts and asked them to share their knowledge about their favorite favorite hair removal method.

The questions we asked them were the following.

1. What is your favorite method for hair removal, and why do you prefer it over the other options?

2. Are there any downsides or negative side-effects?

3. What’s your golden tip to get the most out of the procedure?

LASER HAIR REMOVAL

Favorite Method
My favorite method for hair removal is laser hair removal. The service is quick and relatively comfortable because there is typically a coolant used during the treatment. Although laser removal is not permanent, it does lead to long term reduction.

If regrowth occurs, the hairs are usually much lighter, finer and sparser so that you can go without shaving, waxing or other methods of removal. Once you’ve completed your treatments, you typically only need 1-2 maintenance treatments a year.

Downsides or Side-Effects
You can’t wax, sugar, tweeze or do any method that removes the hair from the root while getting laser because the laser targets the root. So, you can only shave while getting laser hair removal. You need to be mindful of your scheduling if you plan on spending time in the sun.

It is also a bit more costly upfront than other methods of removal, but you save on the back end when you no longer need the monthly waxing or sugaring appointments.

Common side effects are redness and irritation, but laser can potentially cause blisters, scars, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation if not performed by an experienced technician.

Although laser is a great method for hair removal, it is not for everyone. Laser is less effective at treating people with red, blonde, strawberry blond, white or gray hair.

Golden Tip
Laser hair removal generally takes about 6 sessions done 4-8 weeks apart depending on the body area and type of hair being treated. You need to maintain the interval set by your technician and complete every session to get the best results.

After each session, treat your skin gently as if you have a slight sunburn. For example, use lukewarm water to cleanse and aloe can be applied to calm the skin. Also, limit your sun exposure, and it is vital that you wear SPF 50+ sunscreen at all times.

Our favorite hair removal option is laser hair removal.

Laser hair removal using IPL (intense pulsed light) in our opinion is better than most alternative treatments on the market such as shaving, waxing, threading, sugaring, or using depilatory creams and epilating.

It is the preferred treatment for patients that come to us at our Medspa for it saves people time in the long run of eliminating hair and is less painful than epilating.

With every laser hair removal treatments, you will end up shaving less with every laser hair removal treatment until you no longer need to shave.

Women typically shave their legs every few days and at least once a week and that is a lot of time wasted on removing hair from the body over the course of a lifetime. With laser hair removal, you end up saving that precious time hopefully doing more things in life that are more enjoyable.

It is recommended to do at least 6 sessions of laser hair removal, usually spaced four to six weeks apart between treatments. The actual appointment time can range from 10 minutes for areas such as the upper lip to 1 hour if treating the legs.

Laser hair removal is less painful than epilating and waxing. Most people find laser hair removal to be a tolerable beauty treatment and say it feels like a rubber band snap.

Our office uses the Palomar Icon that has a cooling tip and that makes it more comfortable for our patients as well.

We also offer numbing cream for smaller areas such as the upper lip, underarms, or the bikini prior to treatment to make it even more comfortable for our patients. After laser hair removal, the treated skin feels like a sunburn for a few hours.

Depilatory creams are just as time-consuming as shaving, they have a strong odor and they can stain your clothes or towels.

Waxing hair is time-consuming and expensive over the course of a lifetime – every two weeks for upper lip and at least once a month for legs or bikini, making laser hair removal an attractive treatment that will end up saving you lots of time in the long run checking if you need to shave under your arms or on your legs.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The downsides and side-effects of laser hair removal is that some people may find it expensive in the short term and opt for shaving, sugaring, creams, or waxing.

A typical 6 treatment package of laser hair removal for the underarms can range between $600 to $1000 and for the legs can range between $1100 to $1800 or more.

Most medical spas do offer financing options which makes it easier to split up the payments, so you don’t have to pay it all up front.

When comparing alternative treatments, do consider the lifetime cost of some of the alternatives such as waxing once a month.

Golden Tip
It’s best to get laser hair removal treatments between fall and winter as it is not advised to actively tan or treat sunburned skin with laser hair removal such as during the summer months.

Our tip for getting the most out of laser hair removal treatments is selecting a Medspa with a great reputation.

Read their Facebook or Google reviews to make sure you will get great results and set up free consultation to get educated on their laser, who will be doing their treatment, and if they offer any payment plans.

Stephanie Ivonne – Smart Style Today

Favorite Method
Nothing’s worse than being in a rush throwing on a dress or shorts and realizing you haven’t shaved until it’s too late. I absolutely hate shaving. I much rather wear jeans some days than having to risk the irritation experience practically every time. Shaving causes nicks, cuts and razor burn all in the name of beauty for smooth skin that only lasts a day or so or in my case until the end of the night.

As an Esthetician, I’d have clients come to me with razor burn and truthfully I could relate firsthand. I spent all this time suggesting laser hair removal to them without having tried it myself until I decided to take the plunge.

At first, the sound of a laser burning your hair sounds like a form of torture but take it from me it’s not (besides a sensation of a rubber band snapping it’s not as painful as waxing [yes I know, it’s still not the best feeling!]).

The discomfort that you will experience lasts only minutes until the area being treated is complete. The result is smoother skin, finer hair that when following the proper maintenance of scheduled sessions every 6 to 8 weeks you will not only notice a huge difference but you will find the more sessions you’ve done, the less hair grows back until it permanently disappears.

Depending on the area being treated, as well as the texture of the hair, some may find that their hair stops appearing after six sessions whereas others may have the same area take over ten treatments to achieve the same results.

The way it works is the laser will emit a light that will then become absorbed by the pigment. Hair follicles will become damaged as the energy from the light is converted to heat which prevents the growth of hair.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Like everything else there are downsides. If you’re unable to dedicate the time and resources to follow the recommended treatment plan this form of hair removal may not be right for you.

Those that love the sunshine and soaking up the rays will find their tan skin will cause issues with the laser as it greatly increases the chances of getting burned as well as people with darker skin are highly recommended to skip the treatments due to the risks.

People with very light or white hair will have issues as well and will not make good candidates since the laser will be unable to identify the hairs due to the lack of color since it looks for those darker ones.

Another problem I personally came across was tweezing afterward wasn’t allowed in between sessions and only the use of a razor even on your face.

Golden Tip
The benefits outweigh the risks as this form of permanent hair removal leaves you with…..
1. Fewer ingrown hairs
2. Less razor burn
3. Smoother skin longer
4. Saves money on razors and shaving products in the long run.
5. You’ll gain some extra free time rather than having to stop and shave daily.
6. No major side effects. Only the possibility of minor redness and soreness that goes away in an hour or so.

Overall, I can’t tell you how laser hair removal changed my life and I recommend it to clients, family, and friends. It may seem costly at first but in the long run, it’s completely worth it!

Alisha Van Horens – Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia

Favorite Method
My favorite method is laser hair removal, by far. It lasts the longest and has the fewest side effects. You need to have an initial course of a few treatments, but once that course is done, you don’t have to shave or wax anymore.

You may need a maintenance treatment every 1-2 years, but that’s it. You don’t get the side effects that come with shaving and waxing; no razor burn, no ingrown hairs, smoother results. I personally found that it hurts less than waxing, but not everyone agrees.

Downsides or Side-Effects
If there is a downside to laser hair removal, it’s that the initial course of treatments is more expensive than other methods such as shaving or waxing.

Some clinics offer huge discounts on laser hair removal, but you’re better off spending a bit more and going to a clinic with well-trained professionals so you get safer treatments and better results.

After each treatment, you have to be more careful with sun safety on the treated area, and after your first few treatments, the hairs will grow back, but you can’t shave until the night before your next treatment, so it can be a bit inconvenient in the summertime.

Golden Tip
When looking for a clinic, ask them about the technology they use. I’ve tried IPL and lasers, and I believe the Arion Laser is best. The handpiece doesn’t have to touch your skin and it has a cooling attachment which makes the treatment much more comfortable.

Treatments with the Arion are often a bit more expensive than with other machines, but you don’t need nearly as many sessions. IPL requires 8-12 initial treatments, with Arion you only need 4-6.

Cori Zeichner – Derm Wife™

Favorite Method
I have tried every hair removal method out there. From shaving to waxing depilatories to dermaplaning, nothing compares to laser hair removal.

For example, I would get so much irritation from waxing that by the time it went away, the hair started to grow back already.

Laser hair removal has been the most effective procedure I have ever had done.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The laser treatments hurt, but using numbing cream beforehand makes it tolerable. It takes several treatments, spaced every 4 to 6 weeks, to get the best results.

Even though it is called laser hair removal, to be honest, it has not removed every single hair. I think a better term for it would be laser hair reduction.

The good news is that the hairs I do have are barely noticeable. I do not get any ingrown hairs anymore, do not have skin irritation, and I feel confident because I do not have a 5 o’clock shadow.

Laser hair removal can be pricey and is not covered by insurance. I was lucky to have the friends and family discount, as my dermatologist husband performed the procedure on me.

However, I can honestly say it is well worth the investment.

Golden Tip
If you get laser hair removal, it is important that your skin is not tan, because the extra pigment in your skin can confuse the laser.

Also, you cannot pluck or wax beforehand because the laser needs the route of the hair in order to work. Make sure to go to a trusted physician for the procedure because when done incorrectly it can cause a burn in the skin

Sandy Taylor – Foundation Fairy

Favorite Method
My favorite method for hair removal is the IPL and laser hair removal method. Specifically, I like to use the best IPL laser hair removal machines that are designed to be used at home. I prefer this method because

  • It’s painless
  • Works on sensitive areas (like bikini lines and face)
  • Results are permanent
  • The machines are designed to last long. The new ones can do over 1M flashes.

Downsides or Side-Effects
There are a few downsides to using the IPL hair removal method. They are:

  • Results are not immediate and most people see results around 3-4 weeks after their first treatment.
  • IPL machines can be quite expensive
  • It works only if there is a high contrast between the color of your skin and the color of your hair. It works best on white skin to light brown skin with light brown to dark brown hair.
  • For the best results, you still need to shave the area first before using the IPL machine.
  • You need to wear goggles while using the machines to protect your eyes from the intense light flashes.

Golden Tip
Here are my tips for anyone looking to use the IPL hair removal method:

  • Clean and prep area by shaving unwanted surface hair first. This makes it easier for the light energy of the machine to reach the roots of your hair
  • Choose a machine with 1M flashes and adjustable energy modes
  • Only use the machine at 90 degrees angle against your skin for maximum light transfer.
  • Always apply a gentle skin lotion on the area after the treatment
  • Be patient. It takes a few weeks before you see results (usually 1 treatment per week)

Amy Oztan – Amy Ever After

Favorite Method
I’m half Sicilian, with very dark, thick hair on my legs. I’d been getting them waxed for years, but it hurt so much, grew back so quickly, and the cost was adding up for a result I wasn’t even happy with.

Plus I have fairly sensitive skin, so they would be red and bumpy for the first couple of days. If I wanted to go to the beach on a Saturday, I would have to get waxed on Wednesday or Thursday to give the redness time to go away, and then there would be hair to shave by Saturday.

Shaving without waxing first was worse: it had gotten to the point where if I shaved in the morning, my legs would have a five o’clock shadow by dinnertime. I spent thousands of dollars getting my legs, bikini line, stomach, and underarms lasered, and I couldn’t be happier!

Downsides or Side-Effects
There are downsides to laser. The first is cost. To get the job done right you need to find someone with a lot of experience and good equipment.

The second is time. I had to go every six weeks for over a year, and then four times a year for a couple more years after that.

The third is that it only gets rid of the thick, dark hairs, not the finer, lighter ones. So even after all that time and money, you’ll probably have some hair left. But it will be much less noticeable, and much easier to deal with.

Golden Tip
My biggest tip is to do your research and find someone who knows what they’re doing!

Read reviews from people who are a year or two out from their last treatment, not someone who has only gotten one or two. And be very suspicious of places that don’t seem to be charging enough, or that tell you you’ll only need a few treatments.

Samantha Welch – Healthy Beautiful

Favorite Method
Laser is one of the most effective, relatively pain-free, and efficient ways to achieve long-term hair removal. It is actually considered by the FDA as a form of ‘permanent hair reduction’ as opposed to other methods, which is temporary.

After you complete a series of 6-8 monthly treatments, your hair’s growth should be stunted. It will ideally be very thin and negligible at this point. Since hair grows differently depending on the area, your upkeep will be as you see fit.

Downsides or Side-Effects
IPL and certain types of lasers are only effective for those with light skin and dark hair. Only the Nd: YAG type of lasers are fully effective on dark skin. People with very blonde or grey hair can’t be effectively treated with the laser at all.

Cost is also a factor, as the average is about $143 per treatment. It is definitely an investment compared to other hair removal methods.

Golden Tip
Never miss a schedule! Your goal with laser is to gradually disable or impede your hair’s ability to grow. (You’re essentially trying to destroy these parts with each session.) It’s imperative that you keep at it before your hair is able to fully regenerate.

Natasha Kendall

Favorite Method
Laser hair removal, for sure. It’s amazing because it starts to properly work from just 2-3 sessions and after that, it’s just getting rid of the new hair in the cycle that doesn’t come through as often.

You still have to shave while you’re getting it done but you won’t feel like you have to shave every 3 days as normal after the first couple of sessions with a laser.

When I get a wax, it’s painful and I hate the sore feeling afterward. When I shave, the hair grows back so quickly it almost seems pointless shaving to begin with!

Downsides or Side-Effects
I suppose the cost is a big factor when it comes to laser hair removal. It can be pricey to get your whole body done, and you also can’t have exposure to any UV/tanning, so if you’re getting it done over summer, it will take a toll on your clothing choices.

I would also recommend having a consultation before opting for this as not everyone is suited to it!

Golden Tip
Exfoliate a lot and don’t set foot in the sunbed shop or layout in the sun. Exfoliating will help remove the dead skin and hair that’s now technically ‘dead’ so that it comes out and you aren’t left with those pesky ‘black dots’.

Limiting UV exposure will ensure that you get the most out of the treatment – which is important when you’re opting for something expensive like Laser Hair Removal.

Susan Bard MD – ViveDermatology

Favorite Method
My favorite method is laser hair removal because it affords a permanent reduction in hair. Never having to wax, shave or epilate again is life-changing.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Laser hair removal can be costly. In the wrong hands, one can be burned by lasers so it’s important to seek out a board-certified dermatologist for your treatment. This is especially true for people that have dark skin tones.

Laser hair removal can be painful, but newer technologies afford faster more comfortable treatments.

Golden Tip
Shave before the procedure. Go monthly. Avoid tanning 1 month before, during and 1-month post the entire duration of treatment. You should have the treatment done by a board-certified dermatologist.

Dermatologists are the experts when it comes to hair skin and nails and are extensively trained in lasers (including laser physics) during their 3-year residency training.

Andy – Laserandy

Favorite Method
My favorite method of hair removal would be laser treatments. It’s because in the past I tried a couple of other ways of removing the unwanted hair which always caused me unpleasant skin reactions.

I would either get a rash from shaving or a nasty irritation after a waxing session so you would imagine how frustrating that was.

With laser treatment, I get an efficient, safe and clean treatment with long-lasting results. And on top of that, it treats and prevents ingrown hairs. I’m so happy that I don’t have ingrown hairs anymore. Getting a laser hair removal device was definitively a good call for me!

Downsides or Side-Effects
The only downside I can think of would be that laser hair removal is effective on a narrow range of hair and skin colors, so people with light hair or dark skin would be disappointed with the results.

A home laser hair removal might not the best option for them to get rid of unwanted hair.

Golden Tip
In order to get the most benefit from laser hair removal treatment, I take very good care of my skin. I avoid the sun before and between the laser sessions, I do a weekly exfoliation with a dry brush and I always use a noncomedogenic lotion to hydrate my skin after each session.

Loreen Hwang – Coucou Jolie

Favorite Method
I love laser hair removal. It’s a life-changer. It’s expensive but it’s so worth it. I did my bikini and underarms and it’s made a huge difference. It does take about 7-11 sessions to have your hair not grow back and after that you might need a touch up every year. I haven’t yet. It slightly stings but the pain lasts seconds.

If you can’t afford to do laser my second favorite would be using an epilator on my legs but this hurts the first few times and it takes some getting used to. If you don’t know what it is it’s basically a machine that plucks your hair fast. When I do use it my hair grows back very slowly.

You do have yo remember to exfoliate your legs in between the times you use it. I don’t recommend using this on your face or bikini. That can get tricky.

Downsides or Side-Effects
I use depilator sometimes and if you leave it on too long it will burn your skin and you’ll bleed. I’ve done this by accident several times. The upside is that if you use it correctly you are left hair free and your legs feel smooth.

Golden Tip
Do your research. Make sure you pay attention to whatever you are using so you don’t injure yourself and you may have to use different methods of hair removal in different parts of your body for the best results.

Tiffany Ascensio – Always In High Heels

Favorite Method
My favorite method for hair removal is laser hair removal. It lasts a long time, and you don’t have to worry about maintenance. I once got a pedicure and had the technician ask me why I didn’t have any hair follicles on my legs since the laser removes the entire hair.

It’s so nice to not have to worry about shaving your legs in a rush while you’re on vacation or because you decided last minute to wear a dress.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Laser hair removal is expensive and can be painful. You also have to have multiple treatments over a very long period of time. There is a chance that hair will grow back after an extended period of time and sometimes there are a few errant hairs that continue to grow back.

Since lasers pick up on pigment (not the hair itself), you may need to stop tanning/stay out of the sun/etc. while receiving treatments.

Laser hair removal is best for body hair treatments (legs, underarms, bikini, etc.) and less likely to be used on the face than other treatments like waxing.

Golden Tip
Ask your esthetician/technician how to get the best results, and then do what they tell you. They’re the experts! And make sure you complete all of your sessions.

Hair grows in cycles. So just because you’re not seeing any hair this month, doesn’t mean you won’t have any next month.

Marianna Casmirili – Marianna’s Aesthetics & Spa

Favorite Method
IPL is fabulous for permanent hair obliteration in about 10-12 treatments.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The downside is that it will have diminished effectiveness on blonde or white hair, leaving electrolysis as the only alternative in the latter case to achieve permanence in a short period of time.

Electrolysis can result in permanence even during the first treatment, however, each hair root pappillum must be electrolyzed one-at-a-time, which is extremely time-consuming.

Waxing, with the high-quality depilatories available today, is a quick fix for any body part. Over time, several years, as waxed hair becomes weaker and sparser through repeated treatment, permanent hair obliteration can be achieved. It really takes years though.

Dermplaning is great to remove vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face.

When done properly, by an experienced professional, none of these four modalities of hair removal will cause side-effects or discomfort.

Golden Tip
To get the most out of hair removal procedures, we will apply a medical-strength topical numbing agent prior to the procedure, and send clients home with our botanical hair regrowth retardant.

Desireé Delia

Favorite Method
It varies depending on where on the body the area for hair removal is and its size.

For example, the larger areas such as my underarms or pesky areas like my upper lip my preferred method is laser hair removal because I personally don’t want any hair there for as long as possible.

For smaller more intimate areas like my eyebrows, I alternate between threading and waxing. Because I appreciate the way a freshly shaped wax brow looks and love the sharpness threading results provide to manage the upkeep in shape between appointments.

Plus I think it’s nice to give the skin a break so not too much waxing nor too much threading but ultimately the choice should be dependent upon your goals.

Downsides or Side-Effects
With laser hair removal you want to make sure that you are transparent with your technician about any medications, sun exposure, and medicated face creams because it can burn the skin.

Most med spas will provide you a list of do’s and don’ts before your appointment and sometimes this type of treatment isn’t right for everyone especially when you’re looking to getting it done right before a big trip or upcoming special days/events.

Golden Tip
Whatever treatment you choose make sure to listen to the aftercare instructions and that means actually doing it to see the best results! Dedicate yourself to the process and take before and after photos so you can compare the results yourself.

Lital Lev-Ary – Light Touch Laser Spa

Favorite Method
As hair removal specialist that doing this for over 10 years, I can definitely say that for most of the time laser hair removal will be the best method to get rid of that unwanted hair. It’s fast, not as painful as in the past and can get rid of up to 95% of the hair.

What most people don’t know is that laser hair removal can be treated on all skin colors. Great for ingrown hair problems, makes your skin soft. Sometimes it will also lighten your skin in the areas that got dark from waxing or shaving such as underarms.

My other favorite method will be electrolysis since that method will work the best for light or grey hair. Those two methods complete each other.

Downsides or Side-Effects
People with very light and grey hair should not treat with laser hair removal since that probably will be a waste of their money. It’s not painless! I never promise that to my clients but it is way less painful than what most people think. Cooling methods are important for this kind of treatment.

It’s not permanent, nothing is since we are living organisms our body can produce more hair in the future. Some hair can come back after a year, some after 10 years and some never.

No one can tell you how your body will change in the future. For the best results, there is no sun exposure until you finish with all the treatments. There is a chance for discoloration of the skin. But those downsides are not common.

Electrolysis is more painful and long-lasting treatments because the technician targets each hair individually, it also ends up being more expensive, but for light hair and grey hair, this is the only permanent reduction method out there.

Golden Tip
FINDING THE RIGHT PLACE!

You do have to do your own due diligence and research the following: Does the place have laser machines or IPL? (choose the laser for hair removal)

Make sure they have the right laser for your skin color (there are three different lasers out there for hair removal). Know how often you should wait between the sessions for each area in your body (some places will not know the exact time frame – that’s a bad sign!).

Everything else you will have to trust the technician using the right settings, keeping you safe and being thorough.

Kalina Stoyanova – IFB

Favorite Method
My favorite method is laser hair removal combined with shaving. As my dermatologist advised me, this is the best duo. After years of using epilators, I decided to listen to the advice of the professionals.

Lasers are really convenient because your hairs slowly get thinner and finally completely vanish.

Downsides or Side-Effects
One downside of lasers I should point out is that it has to be done during the months with less sun. It is not good to go sunbathing, because the sun can have a negative effect on your skin after a laser hair removal session.

Because of this, I have to arrange all the appointments during the winter and autumn. It’s enough to do it once a month, though. Before every session, I have to shave my hair so that the effect of the laser is optimal.

Laser hair removal is not a joke. It can seriously damage your skin if the equipment is not set properly or if it is not done by a professional dermatologist.

Golden Tip
My golden tip if you go for laser hair removal is to investigate the best place to go. Search for a qualified specialist. This will save you so much drama.

the results are long-lasting and visible. I am happy I trusted my dermatologist and I have been using a combination of lasers and shaving for three years with great results.

Alex DiBacco – Chasing Daisies Blog

Favorite Method
I have thick, dark hair, so this is something that’s not only important to me but is tough to accomplish 100%.

After a lot of trial and error, my favorite method by far is laser hair removal. I find that it works the best to actually remove the hair down to the root so that I can truly have smooth skin.

Downsides or Side-Effects
It is pretty painful (even the at-home method), but this is something I’ll deal with if I can get completely smooth skin.

Golden Tip
I recommend the at-home method so that you can control how often you do the treatment and how strong the laser is.

If you do choose to get your IPL done in-clinic, then I recommend doing a lot of research and asking the technician for a strong setting so that you can get the most for your money.

Avni Parekh – Luvly Long Locks

Favorite Method
My favorite method of hair removal is laser hair removal. I prefer it over other options such as waxing, depilatory creams, and especially shaving.

I recommend trying laser hair removal for areas that you spend the most time maintaining like legs, underarms, bikini area, and face.

Downsides or Side-Effects
There are no downsides or negative side-effects that I’ve experienced. Though it’s important to do all your research to make sure you’re a viable candidate for this procedure and that you select a reputable facility.

Golden Tip
To get the most out of laser hair removal, my tip is to be vigilant about attending each session, typically a series of six, in order for the procedure to yield positive results.

Laser hair removal will save you tons of money in the long run, and best of all, you won’t have to spend time maintaining these areas.

Amy Marvelli – Body Wisdom Perth

I absolutely recommend SHR technology advance hair removal. I recommend it because it is completely pain-free and has long-lasting results. It’s a new type of IPL technology, which gently heats the hair follicles with low energy (48 degrees) but with high frequency.

This means it is less extreme than IPL (which heats the skin to 70 degrees). It is also much better at removing lighter and finer hair as well (something which has always been a limitation of IPL treatments).

SHR is much better in terms of minimizing pain. IPL has long been considered only slightly less painful than waxing (although it is more effective).

The pain is caused by the light delivered to the melanin-rich epidermis that also affects the nerves in that area. With SHR, you do not need to heat the hair follicles to the same degree, so it avoids affecting the pain-causing nerve area.

While the initial upfront cost of SHR is more expensive than waxing or IPL, the long term results mean it will save you money in the long run.

SHAVING

Dino Dilio

I have tried most of the common ways men remove hair from their faces and body.

I tried waxing for my Italian body hair because hair regrowth is slower but it hurt me too much. Especially the nose!

Sugaring was even more painful and wasn’t sweet at all.

My preference is wet shaving with a quality disposable razor. Right now I am using Comfort 3 Advance razor by BIC. It has 3 blades, just enough and a lubricating strip that is long-lasting.

And contrary to the advice that a razor needs to be replaced every week, I can tell you mine last for months. It’s just a matter of rinsing it out properly.

It scares me when I hear of men shaving a dry face with a standard modern razor. Probably in an effort to exert their masculinity.

It’s best to shave after a shower or bathing as the warm water will soften skin and make whiskers stand up for easy shaving.

Shave in the direction of your beard growth. Not against it. Even drag queens don’t do this to avoid nicks and cuts. My beard grows on an angle from the right side of my face to the left. It’s like I’m caught in the wind.

Contrary to special shaving soaps, gels and creams, I find my face cleanser works just as well for shaving. It’s important that this cleanser is water-soluble and laters up a bit.

Many men simply use a dry towel to remove the residue shaving cream and face the day from there. This is bad because the cleanser needs to be completely rinsed away otherwise it can cause unwanted dryness.

Gone are the days when men slapped Aqau Velva on their skins to complete the shaving process. Instead, use a quality moisturizer suited to your skin type and that has a broad spectrum SPF of 30.

This locks in moisture, softens and protects the skin.

The only negative side effects to traditional wet shaving is if you try and rush through it or use a razor that really needs to be replaced.

This avoids unwanted nicks and cuts.

And while we’re on that subject, an important staple for every man and Drag Queen is to have in their shaving gear a “styptic stick”.

This super inexpensive aid looks like a stick of chalk but is made of alumn. The stick is moistened with water and applied to nicks to stop the bleeding.

Our fathers and grandfathers used to stick pieces of tissue in the same manner. Remember?

This article has peaked my interest in electrolysis for my ears as hair seems to regrow the fastest there. I wish I could move them to the top of my head instead.

I’m bracing myself.

Dipti Tiwari – Gorgeously Flawed

Favorite Method
My favorite method for removing unwanted hair is definitely shaving! Before I got into shaving, I tried other at-home hair removal options, including depilatory creams and instant waxing strips.

However, I found shaving to be the ideal option for me as it is the cheapest and the most convenient hair removal method. Furthermore, it is almost painless – unlike waxing or sugaring.

Since I have an endocrine condition called PCOS (polycystic ovaries syndrome), I experience excess hair growth on my body which means I have to remove the unwanted hair more often than usual.

Shaving makes this task much easier for me as I can quickly and easily shave whenever I am in the shower. I didn’t experience the same kind of convenience with the other two methods I tried since they are a bit time-consuming.

Laser hair removal treatment is also something I am planning to opt for in the near future. I have done extensive research about this treatment and I feel that it is expensive, but a great permanent/semi-permanent solution for unwanted hair removal.

I am definitely considering this treatment once I find the right place to get it done from. For now, shaving does the job for me!

Downsides or Side-Effects
The most common downside of shaving, whether you are a man or a woman, is razor bumps!

A lot of people who have a sensitive skin type experience red and inflamed razor bumps on the skin from shaving. If you are not careful with the razor, you can also end up with cuts and nicks on your skin that don’t heal for days and leave ugly scars behind.

Thankfully, I don’t get razor bumps or razor burns on my skin after shaving. I have experienced cuts and nicks a few times though, but I don’t get them anymore ever since I have gotten used to shaving!

If you want to avoid razor bumps, I would suggest using coconut oil or shower gel to achieve smoother skin after shaving. You should also make sure that you shave in the direction of hair growth, it will reduce the possibility of cuts and nicks.

Golden Tip
Exfoliate!

You should make a habit of exfoliating your skin before you start shaving. Exfoliation gets rid of all the dead skin cells on your skin and unclogs your pores, helping you to get a closer shave. It is the best pre-shave tip that I follow.

Once you are done with shaving, use a nourishing body lotion or aloe vera gel to restore the hydration back into your skin!

Favorite Method
I personally prefer shaving as it is something I can personally control and is the most cost-effective for me when it comes to my busy travel schedule.

The other methods such as threading and waxing/sugaring, you have to wait for a certain growth period of your hair and make appointments to get them done, which if you have a busy schedule can be cumbersome.

Laser hair removal is great, but it can be painful and creams can be harmful to your body as well, as you are using chemicals to burn the hair from your skin (which if you leave it on too long can burn your skin as well).

Downsides or Side-Effects
The downside to shaving is that you have to do it every few days, and be careful when shaving so you don’t cut yourself. It’s also preferred to replace your razor after every 2-3 uses, which can be a chore as well if you don’t plan well enough.

Golden Tip
My personal golden tip when it comes to traditional shaving is to shave while taking a shower and to apply hair conditioner to the areas you are planning on shaving, which softens your hair prior to shaving and acts as a lotion so the razor glides over your skin, while still being able to cut the hair.

Plus you already have conditioner in your shower, so you don’t need to buy any new products.

I also swear by using men’s razors, as they are much sharper and used for close shaving (i.e. men’s faces) so they are much easier to use and remove the hair much cleaner.

Hannah Maruyama – YAMA Studios

Favorite Method
A sharp, high-quality razor after exfoliating, then use a moisturizer or oil to shave.

Waxing is brutal on your skin, and it can really damage your follicles and surrounding skin, causing permanent damage over time. Epilators aren’t good options for many because they can cause skin irritation, and honestly, they kind of hurt.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Oh sure, ingrown hairs are more likely with a razor, and you’re less likely to get inflamed follicles if you don’t properly clean yourself or your razor. I’m a bit biased as I’m more geared towards hair and skin health preservation, especially on or near the face and other sensitive areas.

Golden Tip
Exfoliate with a scrub or loofah cloth.

Shave with a sharp razor (not necessarily high end, but sharp.)

Dab on some hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria that may have gotten into your follicles during the shave, then moisturize as usual.

Apply some clear, natural baking soda deodorant to prevent chafing and protect the newly shaved follicles from dirt. It’ll prevent ingrown hairs, plus, you’ll smell great.

My experience with Shaving has been a love/hate relationship if I’m being honest, I’m a dark-haired moderately hairy male. So if I don’t want to look like a beast-man and prefer to look like a handsome wolverine, then I have to “Manscape” properly.

I’ve used all 4 techniques before and although all are doable, some have less pain than the others.

If I’m in a hurry shaving is best although it’s just a quick fix for the day, and regrows quite fast which makes it stubble and annoying.

Tweezing I’ve done on my brows and I like the control I get with that method but it can take time to do that hair by hair and although the pain is low, it’s the constant uncomfortable feeling.

Threading is about the same as tweezing

Waxing I’ve had before on my body. I’ve had the worst experience with that because the pain was 7 out of 10 and although I was smooth when they finished, I broke out afterward and it looked worse so it took about 4 days to settle. I wouldn’t do waxing again ( for me )

Laser hair removal I’ve tried on a small patch on the back of my right leg ( I had a friend that did it ) it was the zapping I didn’t like, kinda like getting shocked. Till this day I have a smooth small patch on the back of my leg lol

I’d have to say for me, shaving or tweezing are my favorite ways of hair removal.

Favorite Method
I prefer shaving because it’s EASY, quick, and efficient. It’s very low cost and you can do touch-ups wherever and whenever you want! No need to grow hair out and wait for an appointment, or deal with sticky residue and redness/sensitivity.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The only big downside is the fact that hair grows out fairly quickly, so you have to do it more often than other methods that deal with pulling hair out at the root. There’s also the possibility of nicks and cuts, but if you’re shaving correctly, that possibility to minimized drastically.

Golden Tip
Here’s the deal with shaving: you MUST have a well-lubricated surface. Shave with an oil-based cream or oil. This will make the razor smoothly glide over the surface of your skin. Exfoliate before shaving, then lubricate the skin and shave away.

After shaving, apply some rubbing alcohol or tea-tree oil to areas prone to in-grown hairs, like the bikini area. It will make any bumps heal quickly. And, of course, always have a fresh razor!

I love a subscription service because I know I’m always getting a fresh cartridge when I need it. The duller the razor, the higher the chances of cuts as it tugs on your skin.

Maia Nolan-Partnow – Below Freezing Beauty

Favorite Method
When it comes to my eyebrows, I am a dedicated waxer and have been for years. I have an esthetician I’d trust with my life, and it’s an affordable once-a-month service with minimal upkeep.

For everything else, I generally prefer shaving. It’s cheap and easy and I can do it on my schedule and as part of my daily routine — no need to make an appointment or carve out time in my day.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The downside to waxing, as with any spa service, is that there’s a cost to it.

Once upon a time, I used to have my own at-home waxing setup, and that was definitely less expensive, but once I had kids, it just became too hard to find the time and focus to get everything set up, take care with my brows, and get it all cleaned up and put away.

You also have to be careful with your skincare — there are certain ingredients you want to avoid because they can put your skin at risk for injury with waxing.

When it comes to shaving, the convenience factor is offset a little bit by the fact that it’s the least long-lasting hair removal option. If I’m going on vacation, I’ll often switch it up and use a depilatory cream on my legs just so I can go a little bit longer before I have to shave again.

Golden Tip
Find an esthetician you love and trust! I’ve been seeing the same esty for almost three years. She is CIDESCO-certified, she knows my brows and how I wear them, and she’s very quick and professional.

I never have to worry about whether they’re going to be the right shape; she gets them right every single time.

Joel Flynn – Gentleman Guide

Definitely shaving. Women have makeup and men shave. Aside from being affordable, painless, and easy, shaving has a special place in manhood psychology, routine, and accessories.

Inherited from previous generations and the lifestyle of men, the modern gentleman has a sentimental attachment to authentic shaving sets and practice itself. I have vivid memories of both my father and grandfather shaving, which always made me feel a sense of admiration.

For me, taking the time to set and prep is a cyclic ritual and important part of my weekly schedule. I take anywhere from half to a full hour, depending on the season, and during this short time, I think through a lot.

I also have a fair set: two razors, two shaping tools, a standalone wooden comb, and a special brush, not to mention cosmetics.

The good shave brings a great sense of accomplishment. The effects of that have a highly positive impact on spirit and soul.

Downsides?

With the right preparation and skincare, there shouldn’t be any downsides. It is the manhood art and experience that matter.

My tip: Do not neglect accessories, preparation, and care.

Daegan Coyne – Ritology

Favorite Method
My all-time favorite is my safety razor! Our great grandparents knew what they were doing. It’s a single blade metal razor made to last, unlike the pink plastic disposables that are adding to the 2 billion razors going to landfill each year.

The single blade provides a smoother shave as it’s not cutting into the skin further with each blade resulting in less irritation and less chance of ingrown and redness.

Further, a safety razor doesn’t have any chemicals, toxins or bacteria-filled lubricating strips meaning a more hygienic shave.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Besides a better shave, the razor is long-lasting which means we are doing our part for the environment, saving money in the long run as replacement blades are super inexpensive and 100% recyclable, and they make for a great bathroom #shelfie given there is NO cheap plastic.

The technique differs from a disposable, so you do have to get use to a new style of shaving but once you do, you won’t regret it.

Golden Tip
Slow down, enjoy the process and take some time out for yourself. Shaving isn’t meant to be a rushed chore. It can be the self-care time you need to prepare you for the day!

Ola Jackson – Your Stylish Ways

Favorite MethodI use the Finishing Touch Flawless Hair Remover because it takes less time, very easy to use and far less painful than tweezing. As an African-American, I have to be careful of the discoloration that tweezing can do, and if my skin gets burned by the waxing it may leave a permanent scare. I can discretely carry the product with me.

Downsides or Side-Effects
The one downside is that I look as if I have whiskers when the hair grows back in. There are also a few hair bumps that give a little discoloration, but not as much as when I Tweeze. It also doesn’t cover a large area at one time, so the other methods may be beneficial.

Golden Tip
I keep one in my car, at home and in my make-up bag. Once I use it, I follow-up with peroxide or Witch Hazel; then I use a little ointment to make sure the I reduce any bumps and discoloration that may otherwise appear.

Lynell Ross – Ziva Dream

Favorite Method
I prefer shaving over all other methods because it is simple, and requires very little time and effort. I am blond and don’t have dark hair to deal with so this method works best for me.

I use an inexpensive ladies razor and a simple battery-powered razor, so the cost is very little. I also don’t have to take the time to go to a salon or purchase expensive creams.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Shaving has to be done daily or weekly, unlike other methods that may last longer. I have to shave excess hair off my face at least once per week. And I shave my legs and underarms in the shower daily.

Golden Tip
Take care of your skin and keep it hydrated by using good moisturizers. I use a little battery-powered razor for my face which is so simple, it only takes a few seconds. I use a ladies razor for my legs and underarms with a good moisture body wash.

Using new razors and quality body wash and lotions will help keep your skin from chaffing or burning and keep it smooth and healthy.

Lisa Smith – Ccdc Love

Favorite Method
My preferred method is using a razor or electric shaver.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Razor blades are expensive and have gotten thinner over the years so I shave less and less. I use a men’s electric shaver because it’s convenient when I need to shave quickly.

Golden Tip
I don’t use shaving cream and keep my razors dry (I don’t store them in the shower) because it keeps them newer longer.

WAXING

Erin Painter – Esthetics By Erin

Favorite Method
Waxing exfoliates the skin and removes the hair from the root, leaving a smoother, longer-lasting result. The more regular you are with your waxing (every 4 weeks is ideal) will help slow down the growth making the service less uncomfortable each time and eventually lessening the amount of hair overall!

Tweezing is tedious. Shaving simply “cuts” the hair, so there are no long term benefits. Laser can be good, but it doesn’t work on everyone and is still a semi-permanent form of hair removal, just like waxing.

So even if laser works for you, there’s a chance you’ll end up back to shaving or waxing from time to time. To my knowledge, the only permanent form of hair removal is electrolysis.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Aside from waxing being a little uncomfortable in the beginning, I think it is the best method of hair removal. It will work for all hair types. Even if you have sensitive skin, you can still get waxed!

Waxing will also help lessen ingrown hairs over time. However, if you are prone to ingrown, using a daily serum, such as PFB Vanish, at home on the waxed areas will be very helpful!

Golden Tip
To get the most out of the waxing procedure, find an experienced esthetician that uses quality hard wax. (I love Berodin Blue hard wax.) Make and stick to appointments every 4 weeks. Be sure to exfoliate at home regularly, at least once per week.

Depending on when you like to shower, you should also exfoliate the day before or the morning of your appointment for the best results!

Michelle Meredith – Bright Color Mom

As a plus-size woman, my favorite hair removal method has by far been waxing (Brazilian, to be exact).

Favorite Method
My size makes it difficult to see all the nooks and crannies of my body to make sure I’m shaving all the hair and some places I really can’t even safely reach. Brazilian waxes ensure it’s all removed and stays that way for a while!

Downsides or Side-Effects
Waxing is expensive. $60 even once a month is a lot of money for a mom with two kids to shell out for something unnecessary.

Golden Tip
There are two keys to a great wax: do not shave anything at least two weeks before you go (but maybe trim if you’re looking a bit like Chewbacca), and don’t be shy!

Trust me, your esthetician has seen it all. Being willing to pull your extra skin-tight or any extra padding out of the way just makes sure you get the completely smooth finish you deserve.

Fiona Gilbert

Hair removal was not something I thought I had to know about when I became an exercise physiologist but I now have an arsenal of favorite products and a list of service providers who do just that.

Clients need help with hair removal because they are going for medical procedures, it affects skin condition/chafing when they are working out, it impacts their self-esteem etc.

For my clients, I always recommend epilating or professional waxing if they are not particularly hairy because you can have between 2 and 8 weeks before you need to do it again.

If you are waxing, especially intimate areas, it is best to go to someone who specializes it in and knows what they are doing.

For clients who have more hair, I recommend a consultation with a professional waxer, having a full wax and then figure out what suits their lifestyle and budget going forward, literally from a clean slate. Laser is an option for a lot of people.

Things to consider:

  • ingrown hairs
  • budget
  • subjective pain tolerance

Karol Young Moses

Favorite Method
My favorite methods of hair removal are waxing and sugaring. They’re both quick, easy, and relatively painless. The conditioners and essential oils contained in the mixes are beneficial for the skin, plus you can say goodbye to any regrowth for anywhere from 2 to 5 weeks.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Because of the slightly exfoliating effect and removal against the grain, waxing can sometimes irritate a more sensitive skin. Sugaring is a more natural option, but if done frequently can permanently damage the hair follicle.

There is a pulling effect in both of these procedures, so as they say, they don’t not hurt. But the sensation is fairly comparable to tweezing.

Golden Tip
To get the most from sugaring and waxing, it’s best to keep skin exfoliated. Avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and rigorous exercise beforehand can help reduce blood circulation which will definitely make it more bearable.

SUGARING

Chelsea Lennon – The Honey Pot

Favorite Method
Out of all the hair removal options out there, I prefer sugaring – both for my clients and for myself. Sugaring is a very gentle, all-natural form of hair removal that has long-lasting results.

Made from only sugar, water, and lemon juice almost anyone can get sugared and there are very few contraindications. Even people with very sensitive skin respond well to sugaring.

When you get sugared, the hair is removed from the root and the hair has to go through a whole new growth cycle before it comes out.

When it does, it grows back into its original shape, which is a tapered point. When that hair starts to grow out, it is thinner, finer, and more sparse than with shaving.

The results last much longer than with shaving or depilatory creams, and many people see the results last longer than with waxing. Sugaring is also a relatively quick procedure – a Brazilian sugar can be done in under 15 minutes in most cases and only needs to be done once a month.

Laser hair removal is the only method of permanent hair removal, however, not everyone can be a good candidate for laser. Light and red hair have a very hard time responding to the laser treatment and do not yield the same results as someone with darker hair.

Even with great results from laser, you will typically still be left with some hair growth and sugaring is a great option to remove the hair that is left behind.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Ingrown hairs are a common occurrence with sugaring. Anytime you remove the hair and it begins to grow back in, the hair has to get out from under the skin.

When it can’t, it continues to grow and grows back into itself – resulting in ingrown hair. Ingrown hair can become inflamed and infected if not treated.

Luckily there are ways to prevent and treat ingrown hairs and that includes keeping the skin hydrated with body lotions or body oils and exfoliating the skin regularly.

By exfoliating, you are sloughing off any dead skin cells that block the follicle opening and by hydrating the skin you are helping to keep it soft, helping the hair have an easier time getting out of the skin.

If you are still getting ingrown hair, you can treat them with antibacterial treatments such as tea tree oil, salicylic acid, and glycolic acid.

If you are on any kind of medications that sensitize the skin or thin the blood (such as Accutane or blood thinners), you may want to forgo sugaring and stick to shaving or tweezing instead until you have been off the medications for a sufficient amount of time.

Accutane, for example, you need to be off the medication for a minimum of 6 months before you can begin to sugar. While the sugar is extremely gentle, you can still experience irritation and even lifting to the skin due to certain medications.

Golden Tip
Let your hair grow! A minimum of 2 weeks is recommended to get the smoothest results, but the longer the better.

Exfoliate the skin the day before your treatment to help get any hairs that are stuck under the skin, up and out.

Stay hydrated – the more hydrated you and your skin are, the easier time the hair has coming out. Drink plenty of water, avoid caffeine the morning of your appointment and alcohol the night before.

You can also take a couple of Advil or Tylenol to help reduce pain and inflammation about 45 minutes prior to your service.

And the most important part, make sure to breathe! While sugaring is more gentle and less painful than waxing, it is not completely pain-free. Your esthetician should be able to help you breathe through it and relax so you can enjoy the results that come from it!

Lyn Tackett – The Genesis Studio Spa

Favorite Method
Sugaring. It is natural (sugar/honey, water, lemon juice/citric acid) and will not irritate the skin like wax, which is a chemical copolymer made from rosinates, the same ingredients used in industrial adhesives and paints.

The sugaring paste is completely biodegradable, unlike wax which does not break down in landfills and can actually harm the environment.

It removes more hair, causing less to grow back over time, doesn’t leave razor bumps, is gentle to the skin and leaves it super smooth.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Downsides: In comparison to another method, no. Biologically speaking, sugaring is the safest method outside of tweezing and even that can irritate follicles and cause a histamine reaction.

Full-body sugaring, not strip sugaring, requires training so it is important to find someone who is an experienced practitioner.

Golden Tip
For best results, exfoliate gently with either a sugar scrub made from raw sugar and olive or grapeseed oil.

THREADING

Mary Winkenwerder – Ultimate Report

I can’t choose, so I decided to share my ideas about two options.

Favorite Method
Threading: A good threading hair removal session offers fast, clean, and precise service in minutes. It’s entertaining to watch an aesthetician perform this type of service as it is exotic. The only sensations with this process are a few pinches with a seasoned threader.

IPL: Virtually no pain involved with this process. The service settings are generally clinical, making safety and care a top priority. The option to have no hair grow back can be great for an extremely busy person.

Downsides or Side-Effects
Threading: Sometimes the threads will catch the skin and pinch it. Sometimes the skin is really red after hair removal. If the service provider makes the topical skin bleed with the string friction you may want to move on.

IPL: At times the laser is not effective in eliminating hair growth. This causes the hair regrown to be uneven, one area not producing hair growth and the other producing hair growth.

Golden Tip
Threading. Make sure the area you will have threaded is clean and dry. Ask your aesthetician if there are any ways you need to sit or position yourself before service.

IPL: Shave the area you will have laser service the number of days your IPL tech recommends. Much of the time this will get you the results you seek. Also, the area you will have treated needs to be completely dry with no products applied to that surface.

Becky Beach – Mom Beach

Favorite Method
I prefer threading because it is quick and painless. I get it done at a nearby Indian span and boutique. I have done waxing and shaving, but both hurt my sensitive skin. When I discovered threading, I did not want to do anything else. I have also learned how to thread my legs!

Downsides or Side-Effects
Threading can be very time consuming and you need lots of practice. I like to apply lotion on the area first to minimize red bumps.

Golden Tip
Make sure the threading is done by someone with lots of experience. The procedure can hurt if it is done too slow. You need a quick hand. Apply lotion or aloe vera to the area before threading to moisten the hair follicle.
