As we embrace the New Year, it may sound like an old cliché but it’s the perfect time to reflect on the past 12 months, re-evaluate, and yes, even resolve to make some changes and to start thinking about new goals, ideas, and, of course, resolutions. This year, we have partnered with our friends at The Global Beauty Group to help get us thinking about some skincare and beauty resolutions to take us into the new year and beyond.
Wear SPF every day, all day
It should be a given by now but SPF should be a part of our daily morning skincare routines every day. Even if you don’t leave the house or plan on being outside, harmful UV rays are quite capable of attacking and visibly ageing your skin through the windows in your home. Sunscreen has come a long way in the past few years, and even if it takes a little trial and error, you are bound to find one that you fall in love with, and your skin will love you even more.
Invest in a good skincare routine – and stick to it
For many of us, skincare became part of our ‘self-care’, especially during the past couple of difficult years. Book yourself in for a professional skincare assessment and learn as much as you can about your skin type and exactly what it needs. Whether you have acne-prone, ageing, or sun-damaged skin, sticking to a skincare routine with products that are geared specifically towards helping you achieve your skin goals will help ensure your skin looks its best. And remember, any new skincare product you introduce into your routine will not work overnight. Try to only introduce one new product at a time as opposed to bouncing from product to product. Effective skincare takes time to work, so once you have found a routine that you and your skin agree upon, remember patience and consistency is key.
Treat yourself to that skincare treatment you have been eyeing off
Whether it be microneedling or LED light therapy, laser therapy, or even hydro dermabrasion, if you have been thinking about trying a new skin treatment, go for it. Find a skin professional who seems as invested in your skin as you are and explore the exciting world of professional skin treatments. Whether a birthday present to yourself, prior to a big event or even a ‘just because’ – you deserve to treat yourself and your skin every now and then.
Overhaul your bathroom/skincare/make-up cabinet
The beginning of the new year is the perfect time to go through your bathroom cabinet, make-up bags, and throw away expired or old products. If it’s something that didn’t agree with your skin or make-up that didn’t work for you and you have a sister or cousin who could still make use of it then by all means pass it along. But if you haven’t touched it or used it in the last six months, it’s time to say goodbye. It also feels so therapeutic to get rid of things you don’t want or need. At the same time, deep clean all your make-up brushes and sponges. Keeping your beauty tools clean is something you should do on regularly, especially if you wear make-up on a daily basis. Your skin will thank you.
Invest in laser hair removal
Hair removal laser machines have come a long way in the past 10 years. It’s now faster, cheaper, and more effective than ever, not to mention virtually pain-free. So, if you are still fumbling around with messy wax or razors, seriously consider investing in laser hair removal. Being hair-free has never been so easy or looked as good.
Think more sustainably
There are plenty of ways you can start to live a more sustainable life, even when it comes to beauty. Think about going cruelty-free or look for skincare and make-up products that are vegan or ‘clean’ or even have recyclable packaging. Beauty companies are starting to do better and we now have more options than ever before, meaning we can also choose to do better. Even just continuing to have conversations and keeping abreast of ways to be less wasteful and live more sustainable lifestyles is a vital component of helping the world we all live in.
Look after your body – from the inside out
This can look different for everybody. Whether it means vowing to drink more water, trying to keep your stress levels low, committing to a new exercise routine, simply getting more sleep or eating healthier. Your skin can be a reflection of what is going on inside your body – and all of the components mentioned can contribute to your skin not looking great. Making some minor adjustments to your lifestyle can go a long way to ensuring your skin is looking its absolute best.
