Skincare is one of the most overlooked aspects of our physical health. People forget that skin is technically an organ. And, like any organ in our body, it plays a vital role in ensuring we live a healthy and happy life. Our skin is the first line of defense for our bodies. Protecting us from physical threats such as allergens, physical impact, heat, and lacerations. And, perhaps most importantly, our skin is responsible for absorbing the Vitamin D from sunlight, while also protecting our bodies from the more harmful effects of UV light.
Our skin also plays a huge part in our mental health. The cosmetic benefits of healthy skin are numerous and have been proven to have a significant impact on your self-confidence. So it is vitally important that you look after your skin. So that it can look after you. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation surrounding skin care out there. So today we are going to break down all the things people get wrong about skin care.
Inadequate SPF
People often assume that the only time they need sunscreen is during the warmer months. But this isn’t true at all. UV radiation is always present. It is entirely possible to get sunburnt during freezing weather. Anyone who has been on a skiing holiday will know how easy it is to get burnt while surrounded by snow.
Applying sunscreen every day will help your skin maintain its strength and avoid the long term risks of skin cancer. During the colder seasons you won’t need to apply as much. But it is still recommended if you’re spending a considerable amount of time outside. And during the summer months it is absolutely essential that you use sunscreen while outside. Getting a better tan isn’t worth the risks associated with UV exposure.
Using Low Quality Moisturizer
We cannot overstate the importance of ensuring your skin is properly moisturized. Drinking water does help your skin stay hydrated and improve its elasticity. But it often isn’t enough since the water you drink has to supply your whole body.
The main issue comes from people using low quality moisturizers. It might seem counterintuitive to claim that moisturizer can actually damage your skin. But it’s true. Using low quality moisturizers, or even using too much of a quality product, can dry your skin out and lead to wrinkles, cracked skin, and skin dulling. This happens when the ingredients in certain moisturizers interfere with our skin’s natural regeneration cycle.
You should look at using all natural skincare products like Batana oil. Products like this are rich in Omega-6 fatty acids which help moisturize the skin while also providing UV protection. If you have naturally oily skin or suffer from any skin conditions then 100% raw batana oil is the best option. Ideally you would apply the oil and then use water to finish the cleansing process. This will moisturize and protect your skin without aggravating it.
Knowing Your Skin Type
You might not know this but there are actually five different types of skin. It isn’t uncommon for any two people to have completely different skin types. And one of the biggest mistakes people make is using products not designed for their skin type.
The five types of skin are normal, oily, dry, combination, and sensitive. It is possible to have a combination of one of these and sensitive skin. I.e you could have oily sensitive skin. As you can probably guess someone with oily skin will want to avoid using too many oil based products. While someone with dry skin will want to avoid using anything that will further dry out their skin.
Most products will tell you what skin type they are best suited for. You just need to do the leg work and discover what type you have. There is a simple test you can do at home. First clean your face with a gentle cleanser. Pat it dry and then wait thirty minutes.
If you have naturally oily skin then your face should appear shiny. If it feels tight then you have dry skin. If only the area from the bridge of your nose up to your forehead is shiny then you have combination skin. If you notice none of these then you have normal skin.
Once you start using products designed for your skin type you will notice a considerable difference in the health of your skin. But it is still important to check what ingredients are used in certain products. Even if a product claims to be good for oily skin it could be doing more harm than help.
