Waxing can be profitable, but back-breaking work! This is the season to start waxing in order for clients to benefit by the summertime. Following are 10 things to ensure the success of your skin care facility’s hair removal treatments.
1. Keep consulting! Clients’ health conditions change along with their medical conditions. Having your client read and sign your consultation card helps ensure client safety.
2. Review your client waiver with your attorney. If you are using your product vendor’s consultation card, it may not have all the information you need in order to be protected in the event of a claim.
3. Know what your liability insurance includes. Attorney fees if a client wants to file a lawsuit? All your treatments? Does it include the business and the therapists? Give your insurance company a copy of your service menu so it can provide you with an expectation of coverage.
4. Always test the wax. Every time. Wax pots are temperamental and can heat the wax to a temperature of discomfort that can even burn the skin.
5. Remind your clients of the hazards. These include sun exposure, hot tubs, steam rooms and “other” sweaty activities. Make it a habit to review this every appointment.
6. Educate. Educate clients that it takes at least three waxing cycles—12 weeks—to see and feel the benefit of waxing, and use this as a tool to pre-book them for their next appointment before they leave.
7. Increase professionalism. Have a clean setup for clients before they enter the room. The wax pot should be spotless; wax sticks, waxing strips, tweezers and other tools should be disinfected and organized on a clean surface.
8. Check your pricing. If a 60-minute facial in your spa is $100, then a 30-minute waxing service should be at least $50. Know what your hourly goal for your space is, and make sure your waxing is priced accordingly.
9. Stay informed. Keep a guide of medications and their contraindications for your spa. It shows your commitment to your client and, if it is readily available, you’ll be more likely to look up an unknown drug before the service.
10. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and use the full system. “Cherry picking” from many product lines is not always beneficial to the client. Most waxing kits are a complete system, and you’ll get the best performance when they are used the way the products were designed.
