One of the most gratifying things I do as a surgeon is to help people improve their scars. There is often a strong emotional component to scars, and probably none more so than acne scars. Not only did someone have to suffer the torment of acne breakouts when they were young, but they then must later face their scars every day in the mirror. I am really excited to now be able to offer help to these patients, using laser acne scar removal treatment in my Richmond, VA, office.
Acne Scar Removal Options
- Laser scar revision
- Sculptra collagen stimulation
- TCA CROSS
- Radio frequency energy
- DermaPen and derma rolling
- Platelet Rich Plasma
I am using the Cynosure PicoSure and Lumenis Ultrapulse fractionated CO2 lasers. These are the most advanced tool available for laser acne scar removal. I decided on these particular lasers after researching which laser was the best for treating scars. During my research, I came across a story about the Berns triplets and a doctor in Miami who was helping them heal using the Ultrapulse laser. If you have a sec, check out this video from the Today show, it is inspiring.
The goal with laser acne scar removal is to stimulate new collagen to form from the bottom of the scar, making it blend in with the surrounding tissue. The laser makes very tiny holes in the skin to vaporize the scar, and induced the surrounding normal tissue to heal the scar.
The entire process takes about 20-30 minutes and is very well tolerated by patients. I use a combination of several techniques to make certain patients are comfortable during the procedure. After, patients perform skin care and are able to resume normal life in 3-5 days.
I like to combine the lasers with a product called Sculptra which encourages collagen formation in the skin. These 2 techniques working together really speed the improvement that patients notice after each session.
Because the laser is inducing your body to heal, the results are permanent.
Here is a short video of a patient we treated recently. Using the Ultrapulse laser, I use the DeepFx platform for the worse part of the scarring, and the the Active FX platform to resurface the skin and blend all of the treated areas. This is known as Total FX.
