Unwanted body hair can affect how we feel, our social interactions, what we wear and what we do. Options to remove unwanted hair include plucking, shaving, bleaching, creams and epilation (using a device that pulls out multiple hair strands at once).
Longer-term hair removal options include electrolysis, which uses an electrical current to banish individual hair follicles, and laser therapy.

How does laser treatment work?
Laserslight
However, the laser needs to be targeted at specific cells to remove hair permanently and minimise damage to the surrounding tissue. These are the hair follicle stem cells sitting in the part of the hair called the hair bulge. The laser needs to be targeted at stem cells that sit in the hair bulge.
Will it remove hair permanently?
Lasers can either permanently reduce the density of the hair or permanently remove unwanted hair. Some hair will regrow after a single course of laser therapy and patients will need ongoing laser treatment.
Permanent hair removal means none of the hair in the treated area will regrow after a single course of therapy. Plus, no ongoing laser therapy is required.
Whether hair is removed permanently or reduced in density is influenced by:
- The quality and type of the laser used
- The colour and thickness of the hair being treated
- The colour of the patient’s skin
- The competence & training of the therapist
However, currently available lasers do not work if you have grey hair with no melanin pigmentation.
How many treatments will you need?
The number of laser treatments you will need depends on your skin type. This categorises your skin by colour, sun sensitivity and the likelihood of tanning.
Those with dark hair can usually achieve permanent hair removal with 4 to 6 treatments every 4 to 6 weeks. Those with fair hair will only achieve permanent hair reduction. After an initial course of laser treatment, you may need 6 to 12 treatments a month apart.
