I often get asked “what is the difference between Soft Wax vs Hard Wax?” when it comes to hair removal.
I hear this question from new waxing clients and also those who religiously get waxed at Aru. So let me explain and together, let’s figure out which one is the best one for you!
Ok, my truth, I get waxed!
I get my bikini area and upper lip waxed and I love it! I have had the opportunity to use both methods of soft or hard wax and my personal preference is soft wax.
However, something to know about me is that I have a VERY high pain threshold, so, waxing “down there” doesn’t hurt, like I hear it does from nearly everyone else!
I never thought to recommend my clients and friends to pop a Tylenol or drink a glass of wine to ease the pain prior to coming for a wax – but apparently, it’s a thing!
So, if you know your body and you know your pain threshold is “normal”, unlike mine, put some numbing cream on the area or take a pain killer before coming in for your waxing. (I don’t know if I’m allowed to say to do that, but just consider this as one of your girlfriends giving you advice!).
Many of us who get waxed do so because it’s convenient. Waxing does the job and it’s not super expensive, like laser hair removal can be.
Waxing is still a very popular method for hair removal. it’s not just popular with the women, we have a lot of men who come in for waxing as well. (No, Aru does not offer Bro-zilians or Man-scaping – but we’re happy to do other areas).

Things to Consider…
Before I start with the differences of Soft and Hard Wax, I would like to preface it by saying that it is VERY important that you receive waxing services from a clean, reputable establishment, where you also feel safe and you know that they’re sterilization processes are up to code and followed.
I’ve heard too many stories of clients coming to Aru after they’ve tried elsewhere, and they’ve contracted infections (Staph) or burns in areas where it can be very uncomfortable.
At Aru, we follow strict protocol to ensure our rooms and implements are sanitized for each guest, creating a safe environment for our valued guests.
Phew! Ok, now that I got that off my chest, let’s start!
But What’s the Difference – Soft Wax vs Hard Wax?
Lets start to understand the differences between Soft Wax vs Hard Wax.
Soft Wax is applied with a wooden spatula. Ensure your spa therapist is using a NEW stick after each application if you are having your bikini area done. The spatula is dipped into wax that has been heated and melted to a consistency much like fresh honey.
Typically, a layer of oil is applied to the skin (we use tea tree oil, as it is also an anti-bacterial), which acts as a barrier between the wax and the skin. When the wax is pulled from the skin, it doesn’t pull the skin off. Soft Wax is applied in a thin layer and pulled from the skin with a cotton cloth.
Hard Wax is also heated up but only to the consistency of…hmmm…how do I describe the consistency? The closest thing I can think of is a freshly chewed piece of Bubbalicious Gum; it’s thick and not runny at all.
Hot Wax is applied directly to the skin and thicker than what one would apply with Soft Wax. The Hot Wax is left to sit until it cools, and the therapist pulls the wax off once it’s cooled. No use of cotton cloths, just fingers.

Try Both Waxes Then Decide.
Do you remember when I mentioned I’ve had both methods done… I had Hard Wax done on my upper lip and I liked it, but I felt using Soft Wax was more consistent. It pulled my moustache out more effectively, with just one application.
I can not speak to the difference in pain, and what we are hearing from most of our guests is that Hard Wax is far less painful. I will take their word for it!
Perhaps it’s how we perform our Soft Wax with a layer of tea-tree oil to protect our skin from being pulled. I’d say that our guests are 50/50 when it comes to their preference.
