Rahul Mishra Fall 2019: Waxing Poetic for Home

Once in a while, fashion journos get unforgettable press notes, and the Rahul Mishra Fall/Winter 2019 release is one of those. Beginning with a poem titled “Village Diary,” it went on to describe a trip back to his home in India, diary style of course.

Somehow, it feels disrespectful saying anything else because the designer spoke from the heart. So, here it is in its entirety.

Village Diary

Meandering through those lanes back to my village, I saw the house where I used to play We don’t live there but memories do Flash past in front of my eyes I saw that wall of brick & mortar Where I drew with charcoal and made mud houses of clay The rooms have no furniture, they’re blank & empty The walls have no plaster, but left over peels The filtering sunshine lights the room, Through the broken glass, I saw a creek and a shrubbery bloom A young sapling has taken over the drain pipe- Grey and now pretty green, with rain-fed moss spreading along There was life in the barren, left all abandon All sorts of humming, buzzing, creaking, croaking, The cricket, the wasp, the pigeon, the spider, the bumblebee There are many more occupants now, the proud owners Nature’s Kings and Queens

Paris, 2nd March 2019

It’s not very often that the perception of despair is truly challenged. It’s a heavy cloud, a bale of undone cotton, weighed down by the remnants of our experiences-remnants that exist and those that cease to. And so, when one dusty evening in my village of Malhousie I was confronted with what remained of my childhood, I drew a picture of despair and pleasantly found myself in the gifted position of challenging it-revelling in its sweet aftertaste.

The narrow lanes grassy as ever, unfazed by us kids cycling to the village well, the hopscotch lines blurred to nothingness, the air bereft of our giggles and the houses, owner-less, left to live a life of their own.

I had moved on, my friends had moved on, but my childhood remained where I left it. Not in its old naive glory but it stood as a tombstone for nature to creep out of, bloom full through crevices long lost in time.

The walls did not smell of my playful banter when I was eight, but it smelled of something else. It smelled like rain, like freshly cut grass, like a bashful flight of a myna, like a sea of wild roses fighting concrete and claiming ground. It smelled like a loss of things I had lived and it smelled like a promise of everything that was to come.

This fall, the clothes are humble embodiments of that sentiment. Yards of black and white handwoven in central India, paint a palette of my village buildings-a nostalgic rendition of the past.

I couldn’t miss the victorious sight of a tiny sapling sprinting towards sunlight through the crack of a broken pipe. Through window panes and defunct ceilings, emerged an undergrowth of wild flowers. The jackets and dresses bare a canvas to that vision in meticulously hand cut three dimensional blooms in a maze of colours lent by ‘fareeshe ka kaam;’ An age old artisanal technique of embroidery, ‘fareesha’ translating to ‘light’ itself.

I was thinking of my school when I picked the tartan. Strict codes of uniform swept by a tide of lace and covered to oblivion by drapes in cotton, an observation of the organic, the wild-reclaiming what was once its own.

This by far has been my most intuitive endeavour, where there is little fabrication involved. The weavers drew the lines unhindered-writing their own verses, humming their own tune. It was a moment of sheer mirth to watch the embroiderers tack the flowers, in silk floss, as how they wanted. The tartan was their playground now and their imagination the limit. No two pieces of the same garment are ever going to be the same, in fact no box in a piece will ever be the same.

The collection grew itself and the artisans birthed that growth. There is a life in the clothes now that could not have been manufactured-it was a natural inception and we watched it blossom in plain sight.

It is indeed essential to challenge despair and I, for one, feel blessed to have clothes walk me through it, to have Nature at its most defiant serve a promise -a gleam of optimism.

NEW YORK, September 12th 2011 – On Sunday morning, Lela Rose presented an incredible collection in front of hundreds of people, including some familiar faces like Susan Sarrandon and Mariska Hargitay, just to name a few.

Trying to lookfor words to describe it, it seems that the best description came from Lela Rose own words. Thus, here a part of the brand’s press release, that clearly illustrate the vibe of the collection.

” The inspirations for this season were the neon graveyard, the unrestored and broken signs that dot the landscape of Las Vegas and Coney Island. Letter blocked silhouettes and chipped embroidery evoke the weathered stacked signs of Vegas, while cyclone prints, carnival stretch cotton and dotted blocked knits bring a Coney Island funhouse vibe. Faded lemon, periwinkle and neon tangerine, give an electric buzz tothe collection.”

Hard to say more when it is to reality. Their metaphore is as poetic as the collection was. Bleached metallic tweed, stripped paint twill, and wash out voile were just among the incredible fabrics used to give this cool kids vibe, in a more womanly version.

Next summer, we do want to be dressed in Lela Rose.

MILAN, Mar 1, 2009 / FW/ — Blumarine played with both complex and simple as design elements. At times styles were basic and at others more intricate and unique but where one part lacked in design it made up for in print and vice versa.

The show was a stretch for Blumarine, going to places that could almost have a Just Cavalli aesthetic. Young, bright, bold, and in your face, nothing like the typical Blumarine shows that have people standing up and clapping at the end with tears running down their cheeks.

The show not only roughened up the typical romantic Blumarine look, but it also played with the idea of casual and elegant attire. Shows normally start with casual and then go fancy, so to see Swarovski encrusted jeans intermingling with the floor length gowns, at the end of the show, definitely sent an interesting message.

Colors were bright and very Stephan Sprouse and Andy Warhol inspired. Maybe Anna Molinari thinks romantic just won’t do it any more so she took everything up a notch to full on leopard print outfits and full out big, gaudy costume jewelry.

Pants were super tight, skirts full and flowy, and tops strapless and sexy. Shoes continued on the strappy platform heel trend while clutches were the hottest shape purse. Prints were wild in Andy Warhol inspired poppies and multi colored neon animal prints. All in all the collection was a fun burst of energy and creativity from an un expected source.
