3 years ago, if you asked me anything about fillers or B-tox, I would’ve said I have no idea why people do it and that is something I would never consider, however, this year my perception of the medical aesthetics industry has changed!
Honestly, I always thought negatively about the medical aesthetics industry, I think maybe because I watched way too many shows on TV that kind of freaked me out when I saw the end results or what happens when a person does too many doses of B-tox.
Women don’t necessarily like sharing when they do B-tox or fillers because they scared of what others may say. I was also a bit nervous about sharing my journey on my social media pages, but I’ve received nothing but positive feedback thus far.
How it all began…
Earlier last year, when I met Tahera for a SoGal event (I’ve known Tahera for a few years now, she owns GreenDot baby) we chatted about my face shape and how she felt she could enhance or improve some of my features. My appearance has been one of my biggest insecurities over the years. I hated looking in the mirror or smiling for photos. I blogged about it here.
When she told me what she could do, I immediately went online to read about it. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting a miracle, but I was willing to try it to see if it would make a difference. I had nothing to lose but something to gain.
So, I agreed on being a model at one of her courses. We did the first session of fillers and I bruised (it depends on you and on how sensitive your skin is). For a week, I had to hibernate but afterward, I could see a little difference, it wasn’t huge, but it was there, so I agreed on the second session which was more fillers and a sprinkle of B-tox.
The second session made a significant difference, but the third session was the cherry on the top.
My face shape changed! People could see it; I could see it and I absolutely love it!
Will I do it again?
Tahera brought back my self-confidence without me having to spend a million rand on jaw surgery which is still an option I am weighing for the long term. I would definitely do fillers again to maintain what I currently have. There are pros and cons of doing this long term, but I think it is important to do your research.
Trusting your doctor plays a key factor in this journey. I trust Tahera 100% which is why I was so comfortable with being her model. I highly recommend you check her services out if you are based in Gauteng.
Medical Aesthetics is all the buzz at the moment, it’s a growing industry in South Africa.
The key difference from cosmetic treatments is the active ingredients in products utilized, the depth of treatments as well as the science behind every procedure.
Tahera says B-tox is one of the most scientific treatments provided in medical Aesthetics as the result is almost certainly guaranteed. Patient satisfaction is high, and it is replicable with every treatment.
Products used:
The products used were Restylane Lyft, Juvederm Volux and Botulinum Toxin.
First Session: Tahera injected Restyalane Lyft into the chin.
Second session: Tahera injected botulinum toxin aka neuromodulator which relaxes the muscle.
The third session: We did Juvederm Volux which is a very volumising dermal filler. Tahera used volux in the chin as well as a technique to enhance the cheek area.
Fourth session: We enhanced the jawline and chin with Volux and repeated the B-tox.
What is the difference between B-TOX vs Filler?
Information shared by Dr. Tahera Essay
Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator. It works on the neuro muscular junction which is the connection between muscle fibres. It is the most scientific of aesthetic treatments as results are reproducible and it generally works every time.
It’s to prevent the muscle from exerting an action. When you frown 5 muscle groups work together to give you that ’11’ that most people with a frown refer to. B-tox stops those muscle groups from contracting i.e. it relaxes the muscle and makes you look less angry. ????
Other areas we treat with B-TOX are crow’s feet or laugh lines, forehead lines, and bunny lines or lines across the nose. These are the main indications and usually involved the upper third of the face.
In my case, Tahera used it on the chin to relax the mentalis muscle.
Did you know that B-tox is also used for excessive sweating under the armpits and for platysma bands in the neck?
Fillers are different to B-tox in that they are composed of hyaluronic acid.
Fillers are predominantly used to volumise and improve fine lines and wrinkles. Tahera says that the injecting of fillers in her opinion is more of an art than a science. Its sculpting and moulding.
Fillers have different volumising capacities.
“Imagine that you have a gel. When you want to fill in small cracks you would use something that is soft and blends in.”
When you want support, you need something with a really firm consistency that will hold and lift. This is the spectrum of fillers and there are the in-betweens.
How do we choose which filler to use?
Lipsvolume
Where one requires lift and volumisation we often layer products. The firmer products are used as building blocks or support pillars. We then use a different filler to volumise.
In the area below the eye, we use very soft fillers. The chin area is a very popular treatment as it elongates the face and is a very satisfying area to treat.
A full-face rejuvenation with dermal fillers can really change the way a person looks. Combination treatments always work best.
Some of the side-effects you should know about:
- Bruising is the most common so plan your treatments in advance, so it does not clash with any functions.
- Ptosis or a droopy eyelid is rare. It can occur when injecting the forehead however all practitioners try to avoid this complication. It does resolve but can take a few weeks.
- Headache or heavy feeling in some patients.
The results are often visible within 2 weeks of injecting sometimes sooner. These treatments do come at a hefty price tag so if you can find a doctor who is still learning and needs models for courses, to begin with, do it, so you can get an idea of how it works.
