Growing up in a family full of women who love beauty as much as I do, there are a few things we invest in as part of our self-care routines. These include caring for our hair, teeth, and of course—our skin (which includes our underarms)! how to remove underarm chicken skin
When laser hair removals became a thing, we were quick to book several sessions with our dermatologist. Prior to that, I used to just wax all the time. I think I was in college when I started my laser hair removal. My pain tolerance was quite high, so it took my dermatologist only six sessions to completely remove my underarm hair.
A few years later, I underwent Revlite laser treatments and STRIP WHITE Laser Therapy—helping my underarms look even better! Since then, I haven’t done a laser retouch. But once it’s safe, I’m definitely booking another session to get rid of a few stubborn strands. These reappeared about two years ago and once in a while, I’d have to shave them off. Doing so has caused my kilikili to get slightly bumpy, so I put together a home remedy to help address it! If you want to know how to remove underarm chicken skin, keep reading.
But first—what causes these annoying bumps?
The Female Network shared that chicken skin or small underarm bumps are common among Filipinas. Plucking, shaving, or waxing may cause this because these methods create plugs that prevent hair from reaching the surface of the skin. Glamour Magazine also mentioned that when hair follicles get blocked due to a build-up of keratin (a protein that promotes hair growth), pesky bumps are formed.
How to remove underarm chicken skin at home:
Fortunately, there are products that can help remove these bumps. They’re easily available in drugstores and online! I linked each product to Lazada in case you’re interested to buy any of them. Just a quick disclaimer that some links are affiliate links where I may earn a small commission to help me maintain my blog. While they can’t get rid of chicken skin completely, they definitely helped reduce the ones in my armpits. And since I’m too paranoid to book a laser treatment right now, I’m sticking to this routine in the meantime.
Step 1: Exfoliate with A Bonne Spa Milk Salt
Every other night, I exfoliate my underarms with A Bonne Spa Milk Salt. I first heard about it from Liz Lanuzo of Project Vanity who got lighter knees and underarms because of it! Exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells and deodorant residue—unclogging the hair follicles in the process. Just be careful not to scrub too much to avoid irritation or worse—darkening.
Step 2: Moisturize with Cetaphil Brightening Night Comfort Cream
Similar to how I moisturize as the last step of my facial skincare routine, I apply Cetaphil’s Brightening Night Comfort Cream on my underarms every night. It’s rich in niacinamide (or Vitamin B3), which is known to visibly reduce dark spots and smoothen the skin’s texture. I initially started using this on my face as an alternative to my other night creams—but I realized the niacinamide could help my underarms a lot! So I used it on my armpits instead.
Step 3: Use a deodorant like Dove Intensive Renew Deo Dry Serum Collagen + Vitamin B3
As far as holy grail deodorants go, the Dove Intensive Renew Deo Dry Serum Collagen + Vitamin B3 is my absolute favorite. I incorporated it into my daily routine after I attended the product launch a couple of years back. Unless I discover a better deodorant, I don’t think I’m changing this product anytime soon. The combination of collagen and niacinamide really helped improve my underarm skin texture.
These three products currently make up my kilikili skincare routine. I’m thinking of adding glycolic acid into the mix one of these days—just to see its effect in renewing skin cells. But for now, I’m quite pleased with the results and I hope that I can continue to see improvement while I’m not able to do a laser retouch with my dermatologist.
