We all have our little insecurities and I think if there is something we can do to make ourselves feel better about our looks, we should do it. I am not saying to go get a whole body lift, but a little something here and there makes a huge difference; whether it’s Laser Hair removal, cellulite reduction, facials etc… The non invasive stuff can really go a long way!
I recently went to visit Downtown Medspa and met up with owners and married couple Eric and Marietta to get the background scoop on their practice and the services they offer. I tried the underarm laser removal, and it was so quick, virtually painless and my skin felt silky smooth. I am hooked!! Can I do my full body now?!
What are your names? Dr. Eric Reynolds. Marietta.
What do you do?
Marietta: I manage and own Downtown Medspa.
Eric: I’m Dr. Reynolds and I practices out of Jersey City and New York. I’m a medical director for Downtown Medspa and East Orange Foot and Ankle. I practices out of Jersey City and New York. I specialize in diabetic wound care and surgery
And you guys are married?
Marietta: Yes!
And what does Downtown Medspa do?
Marietta: We do laser hair removal, facials, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, cellulite reduction, and skin tightening.
Basically everything through the vanity aspect, which we need.
Yes! Absolutely.
Everyone has their little shtick and what bothers them and you guys help out with that.

How long has Medspa been around?
Three years.
How did it start?
We moved here from Journal Square and we live in the area. We said we’ve always wanted a medical spa, but I’ve been pregnant for three years in a row so there was a pause. We felt that there was a need for a great medical spa in the area. When we first moved here 8yrs ago, all our friends went to nyc for treatments. Why not open one in the heart of downtown! After an intesive research, we came up with the following non invasive treatments.
Do you perform all the treatments?
Eric: Yes, it’s a combination of both of us. We also do spider veins as well so for those patients that come in and have that issue we can accommodate that too.
Let’s talk about laser hair removal because I know that’s a big thing. Can you give me more details on that?
Marietta: We do all areas head to toe except the eyebrows. People come in for six sessions and they come back every four weeks. You see about eighty to ninety percent reduction after six sessions.
And it works?
Oh yeah, it works. We do a lot for bikini season now, it starts in January because you need six months. So we see a lot of bikinis.
Do you see full bikinis? Like Brazilian style?
Yes and people screaming, yeah.
Does it hurt?
It’s one of the most sensitive parts of the body, so it’s the lips and then the bikini… but people love it and say it’s totally worth it. It’s like getting a wax.
And the hair is gone forever?
Women are very hormonal so all the follicles and the hair that we kill is already done but because we’re hormonal there’s always new hair.
Those fuckers come out of nowhere.
Eric: That’s it, they just keep coming. You have to also remember what we tell other clients too—you see one hair but you can have several hairs coming out of the same area. Hair grows in different stages.
So is the bikini the most popular place for laser hair removal?
Marietta: The underarms and bikini, we do a lot of faces as well. January, February, March is our bikini season.
Eric: They’re getting ready for summer.
Marietta: Our laser hair removal machine is considered the Ferrari of all machines in the industry. It treats all skin types. Results are unbelievable, no one stops at just one area.
Let’s talk about the cellulite reduction, what do you guys do?
Marietta: Legs are popular of course and we do a lot of skin tightening. I do a lot of JC moms, you have to have skin to tighten the skin up. I always say, if you want to hit that goal come in after you hit that goal, don’t come in if you’re still in the process. Skin tightening and fat reduction machine is very popular with new moms and ppl that had drastic weight loss.
Having kids really fucks with your body.
Eric: Totally.
Marietta: Yes, I have four kids.
Four kids?! Holy moly!
I have triplets.
You have triplets?!
They’re three years old now.
How do you balance everything?
We just do!
So you do skin tightening—
Skin tightening, cellulite reductions and we do faces with that machine too. It’s like a mini facelift so you don’t have to go get it cut. We currently have a chemical peel at the moment, it’s just unbelievable.
What does a chemical peel do?
My first time was two months ago and it’s unbelievable. All our skincare products are medical grade. This one is unbelievable, it’s nanotechnology that actually absorbs into your skin.
What does a chemical peel do?
It exfoliates your skin and peels it. It goes deeper gets fine lines and it’s really good for pigmentation.
Eric: It’s nice because you’re taking off those layers that really aren’t moved unless you do something like a chemical peel.
Do you have any future plans of adding more treatments?
Marietta: Yes, we’re looking into two different machines—laser tattoo removal and laser theraphy treatment to help hair growth
How long have you guys been in Jersey City?
Eight years.
How do you feel Jersey City has changed?
It’s amazing. We moved to Paulus Hook eight years ago
Eric: We used to live in the city.
Marietta: I was a realtor so I saw everything that went up and it’s just unbelievable. It’s great when you have kids, you appreciate it more.
What’s your favorite Jersey City hangout spot?
Eric: Porta.
Marietta: LITM.
Eric: Amelia’s is another great spot.
