Who doesn’t love a good self-care day? When your body is newly waxed or shaved, your skin is smooth, your spirits are naturally lifted. But then as you closely inspect your body you notice those tiny, stubborn bumps popularly known as ingrown hair. Nothing quite like these pesky little spots to dampen the high spirits right? Ingrown hair is common for all of us and they are not only harmless but also easy to prevent.
But first, what is an ingrown hair?
Basically, ingrown hair is a result of a hair follicle getting trapped under the skin, leading to inflammation and irritation. The hair often gets trapped because the follicle is clogged with dead skin.
Here is our guide to getting rid of and preventing ingrown hair in the future.
Exfoliate your skin
Now that we know dead skin is a major factor contributing to this, it is best to have a regular exfoliation routine even when you do not have ingrown hair. Exfoliate once a week for the ideal results, and more specifically 2 or 3 days before your waxing appointment.
Shaving technique
It is important to shave in the direction opposite to hair growth, using a fresh razor, especially for ingrown-prone areas. It is also recommended to use shaving creams made for sensitive skin over areas like underarms, bikini lines and inner thighs. They dampen and loosen the follicles for a smooth shave.
Moisturise
It is important to keep your body moisturised and hydrated in order to keep dry skin at bay. A proper moisturiser, such as a lotion or body oil, is the best option for everyday use. Apply a good amount all over your body after your shower, but be careful not to overdo it in your genital area since it is already naturally moist.
Clothing
Avoid wearing undergarments that are synthetic or have lace as it can push the hair further down. Cotton panties are your besties at least for the first 24 hours, post hair removal. When it comes to pants, opt for looser fits to allow your skin to breathe and heal.
Pause on popping
Never ever try to burst or pop an ingrown hair- you must fight the temptation no matter what. There is a sky-rocketing chance that if you try to squeeze you will end up worsening or infecting it, and who wants that? If anything, only and only when the hair is above surface level and reachable sterilise a tweezer and pull the hair out.
