The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) recently released its 2017 annual report showcasing cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery statistical trends in the United States for fiscal year 2017. The yearly report provides reliable stats on the demand for both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures. The report always includes some interesting insights into current (and future) aesthetic trends.
We’ve scoured the report and pulled out some of its most interesting findings:
Total Cosmetic Treatments Performed In 2017
Americans15.7 million non-surgical procedures

Other Notable Findings
Butt Augmentation Shifts
While the overall demand for butt augmentation procedures continues to grow, there were some interesting shifts 2017. The number of butt implant procedures sharply dropped (-56%) while both butt lift and butt augmentation through fat grafting (Brazilian Butt Lift) grew by 13% and 10% respectively.
Facelifts Out Of Top 5
Facelift procedures suffered a modest 4% decline in 2017, where a total of 125,697 procedures were performed. The drop was enough to take facelifts off the top 5 list of most popular plastic surgery procedures. A deeper look in the stats shows a huge drop in demand for mini facelift procedures (a 14% decline compared to 2017). One potential reason for this loss could be a shift in demand toward non-surgical injectable solutions like Botox and dermal fillers, both of which experienced a healthy increase over the past year.
Labiaplasty Declines
While the demand for surgical vaginal rejuvenation (labiaplasty) soared in 2016 (where 12,666 procedures were performed), total demand dropped by 19% in 2017. A total of 2,413 fewer labiaplasty procurers were reported. It is, however, difficult to conclude this decline as a true trend since the ASPS only started retaining statistics on labiaplasty in 2015.
Increased Demand for Breast Reduction
The demand for breast reduction surgery spiked in 2017, increasing by 11% from fiscal year 2016. Breast reduction, also known as mammaplasty, reduces the size of the breasts by removing excess fat, tissue, and skin. Breast reduction procedures have one of the highest patient satisfaction scores as the procedure makes the breasts smaller, firmer, and perkier. The procedure also addresses long-term physical issues caused by overly large breasts like back pain and posture issues.
