Are you confused about how to remove unwanted body hair? Read below to find 4 hair removal options you may want to consider.
Waxing
Waxing is an effective method of removing unwanted hair in both large and small areas. Waxing is one method of depilation, which means that the entire hair shaft is removed from below the skin’s surface. It is one of the most effective methods for temporary hair removal. There are many types of waxing techniques, but warm waxing is more effective than most other waxing techniques and is usually performed in a salon. It’s not hard to learn how to do it at home – just be careful not to make the wax too hot! Source: WikiHow
Because waxing weakens the hair, you should find that your re-growth gradually becomes less and less. You won’t be left with a stubbly feel either. Once you start waxing, stick with it and don’t be tempted to switch back to your razor. You’ll undo all the good work you’ve done and waste the money you’ve already spent. It’s usually better to get waxed professionally as some of the DIY wax strips you can buy are messy to use. Source: DailyMail
Laser
Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a laser — an intense, pulsating beam of light — to remove unwanted hair.
During laser hair removal, a laser beam passes through the skin to an individual hair follicle. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle, which inhibits future hair growth. Laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair.
Although laser hair removal effectively slows hair growth, it doesn’t guarantee permanent hair removal. It typically takes multiple laser hair removal treatments to provide an extended hair-free period. Periodic maintenance treatments might be needed as well.
Laser hair removal is used to reduce unwanted hair. Common treatment locations include legs, underarms, upper lip, chin and bikini line. However, it’s possible to treat unwanted hair in nearly any area — except the eyelid or surrounding area.
Hair color and skin type influence the success of laser hair removal. For example, laser hair removal is most effective for people who have light skin and dark hair because the laser beam targets the pigment (melanin) in the hair. However, advances in technology have made laser hair removal an option for people who have darker skin.
Laser hair removal isn’t generally effective for white, gray, red or blond hair because the laser can’t “see” the lighter hair. However, treatment options for lighter hair continue to be investigated. Source: MayoClinic
Shaving
Whether you use a shaving gel, cream or foam, rubbing the skin and scraping away the hair with a razor continue to be the bare essentials of shaving. This helps to remove the daily skin debris that is created along the outermost layer of the skin. This process of shedding dead skin cells is common across men and women. This debris can get impacted within the hair follicles and lead to acne. Shaving on a regular basis is the easiest way to steer clear of ingrown hair or razor bumps. Shaving daily means that you don’t allow the hair to get too long. This reduces chances of the hair entering a neighboring hair follicle. Even if a razor bump does develop, shaving daily will ensure that you can discover and dismantle it before it gets too big and ugly. Shaving on smaller hair means lesser pulling. This avoids the hair shaft being fully pulled out, overcoming the root cause of razor bumps. Source: MensXP
How it works:
- Using a razor or electric shaver, you cut the hair very close to the skin. “There’s a popular myth that shaving causes hair to grow back coarser,” says dermatologist David Pariser, MD. “But that’s not true. An unshaved hair has a tip that is tapered and soft. When you shave it, you shave off the soft tip, so it feels coarser.”
Tips:
- If you use disposable razors or blades, wet your skin and use soap or shaving cream. Shave in the direction the hair grows. Replace your razor often — you can cut yourself with a dull one.
Best for:
- It works anywhere.

Depilatory
The term depilatory actually means ‘removing the hair’. But chemical products coming in cream or spray forms that remove hair are often called depilatories. Most people, including myself, think of these products when they hear or see this word.
How Does it Work?
- A strong, alkaline based product is placed on hair and slowly breaks down the hair, until it turns jelly-like. The depilatory hair removal process takes about 5- 10 minutes for it work, so hair can be easily wiped off with a warm towel at, or somewhat below, skin level.
Benefits:
- It’s fast. A small zone should take you no more than 15 minutes total, from start to finish. Larger areas shouldn’t take too much more time than that. And while the product is doing its thing, you’re free to do what you want. (Although I wouldn’t answer the door.)
- Relatively inexpensive. Your local drugstore should have a variety of kits, creams and sprays to choose from that should fit your budget.
- Easy. Can you apply cream or use a spray nozzle? Then you can use a depilatory. There is no skill involved.
A light tingling is normal while the depilatory is working. If you feel burning, your skin is either too sensitive, you’re allergic to one of the ingredients, or you have left it on too long. In any case, take it off immediately and apply cool water. Source: About
Tips:
- Test it on a small patch of skin first to make sure you’re not allergic to the solution. When in doubt look for the word “sensitive” on the label so you know it’s a gentle formula.
- Don’t use a depilatory product on skin that has been shaved in the last 72 hours or you’ll risk irritation.
- Follow the directions. “I’ve seen chemical burns from people who left the product on for too long,” says Day. It’s better to repeat the treatment until you get your desired results. Source: GoodHousekeeping
