We know it, you know it: beauty is for everyone. But, for some reason, some men still think that certain beauty treatments are not for them. Eyebrow waxing is a classic example – some people worry that their brows will look too ‘done’, with emphasised arches or an overly defined shape. Or that people will notice they’ve had them groomed and they’ll be judged. Here’s the truth: waxing, for many men, has become an essential part of their maintenance routine. Last year, it was the second most booked treatment for men on Treatwell (behind haircuts). It’s just no-one talks about. We think it’s a conversation worth having so we sent 3 guys who have never waxed before to try it out. This is what they told us…
- This was outside of their comfort zone
Male beauty treatments are on the rise (we had 50% more waxing bookings in 2017 than the previous year), and attitudes towards beauty are changing too – this is a hugely positive shift. For our guys, their beauty routine generally involves a quick shower, a beard tidy, and a hair trim when it’s needed. This was something totally new for them but they were up for giving it a go.
- It doesn't hurt... really
Though hairs are ripped from the root, the pain is minimal (just watch the video for proof). No need to worry if your pain threshold is low, there are ways to minimise the impact. But, it’s good to know that regular trips will thin the hair and make it sparser, meaning a less painful pull with each trip.
- 3 How did they want their brows to look?
The consensus was clear, our waxers did not want sculpted brows. Just a little neatening, or ‘weeding out’. Brow waxing doesn’t have to mean defined brows (unless that’s the look you’re going for), just talk to your waxer and explain exactly how you want them. Or ask for advice if you’re not sure. They’ll be happy to find a shape that suits you (and the rest of your facial hair).
- 4 The reveal: were they happy?
The results were subtle, just as requested, but really helped to ‘open up the eyes’ with a slightly more defined brow – eyes are the mirrors into the soul after all – show ‘em off. A wax can last for four weeks, or longer (depending on your hair type), so it’s a quick fix, with long-lasting results.
- 5 Did the experience make them more likely to try beauty treatments in the future?
Yes… if a gift voucher is involved. So maybe a boyzilian isn’t next on their list, but it seems our waxers are open to trying new treatments and fighting the outdated stigma that beauty = for women. Brow tidy, de-stress massage, or a facial to help clear clogged up pores, the message is simple: you do whatever makes you feel good. Isn’t that right chaps?
