How does laser hair removal work?
The FDA-approved Cutera Xeo laser hair removal system generates intense, long-pulsed light through an actively cooled handpiece. As pulses of light penetrate the skin the laser selectively damages the root of the unwanted pigmented hair follicles, impairing their growth. The laser’s cold handpiece is placed on the skin and glides along to reduce discomfort and protect the skin.

Is the procedure painful?
Every patient will feel the laser working on their skin but some have no discomfort while others will experience a snapping sensation. The degree of pain is associate with the size and sensitivity of the area.
Your comfort is our priority so the Laser Image Company uses a laser with contact cooling technology to reduce this discomfort. For those sensitive, the nurse can use a chiller that blows cold air and can prescribe an anesthetic cream to numb the area.
How many laser hair removal treatments are required?
It is important to understand that the hair grows in three stages: anagen, telogen, and catagen with the effective time being the anagen stage when the hair is growing. Only 20% of the hair is in this stage at a given time so sessions are repeated a month apart to accommodate the hair growth cycle and provide optimal hair reduction.
The number of treatments you require depends on many factors. The area being treated, skin type, and hair coarseness and color, age, ethnicity, weight, hormones, diet, medication, and metabolism all play a part. Areas of coarser darker hair, like the lower legs, underarms, and bikini line do the best and require 6-8 treatments. The face and arms may require more sessions.
Who is a good candidate for laser hair removal?
The laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle which means it will be more effective on darker and coarser hairs. Those with lighter hair will need more treatments to get an effective outcome. The long-pulsed Cutera Xeo laser is safe on all skin colors and body areas and allows us to customize each procedure by matching the appropriate laser settings for each unique individual.
Are there any restrictions to my activity after laser hair removal?
After your laser hair removal in the south bay, you can return to your normal activities. As with any laser treatment, it is a good idea to limit your sun exposure for 3 days and use sunscreen on any treated areas exposed to the sun.
How does laser hair removal compare with other hair removal methods?
Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all short-term fixes for unwanted hair and must be repeated on a frequent basis. Laser hair removal offers long-term reduction.
How long will the results last?
Every patient is different but overall, results can last from several months to several years. If the hair does return it will be finer, lighter, and less noticeable. Periodic maintenance is recommended to manage any unwanted regrowth.
What about home laser hair removal systems?
Our experience with the home laser hair removal systems shows that they do provide some reduction but patients stated that all the hair returns after 3 months. This is due to low output energy that stunts hair growth. Some systems will limit the number of pulses per session forcing you to stop and treat several days in a row to cover an area.
Keep in mind safety is our main concern for any laser procedure. Having an experienced professional will allow constant adjustment of settings based on discomfort and skin and hair reaction to provide optimal results.
