For most women, cruising up and down the aisles of the beauty department in search of new face and body products can feel just like a kid in a candy store does. Now when it comes to men, some may be content with simply throwing some water on their face and heading out the door, and though that technique may be quick and easy, it isn’t effective. It is important for men to take care of their skin to reduce risks of sunburn, skin cancer, or other types of skin diseases. AYA Medical Spa offers various facials, peels, and products, all of which are suitable for men, and we’ve rounded up a list of skin care tips and treatments to kick start any man’s new, or improved, skincare regimen:
Tips
Cleanse your face – It is important to invest in a gentle, yet effective, facial cleanser that can remove dirt and sweat, prevent breakouts and ingrown hairs, and minimize pores. We recommend the Obagi Nu-Derm® Gentle Cleanser which removes impurities and oil and leaves the skin feeling fresh and clean. Use once in the morning and before bedtime for optimal results.
Apply sunscreen – Men particularly spend a lot of time in the sun, whether it’s playing sports, laying by the pool, or just hanging out on the back porch. But it is necessary for you to protect your skin from excessive UV exposure as it can increase the risk of sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer. Opt for a sunscreen that contains a high SPF count such as the Elta MD® UV Physical which contains SPF 41, provides UVA/UVB sun protection, is water resistant, and helps prevent sun damage.
Invest in a quality razor – Just like many women, men also suffer from ingrown hairs but mostly on their face. Spending a little extra money on a good razor can make a world of difference as it can prevent nicks, cuts, razor burn, ingrown hairs, and breakouts. When purchasing a razor, look for brands that fit your skin and hair type. To prevent or treat ingrown hairs, shave while in the shower as the steam will open up pores and soften the skin to give a close, clean shave. Secondly, if an ingrown hair has appeared, exfoliating will help loosen dead skin and prevent hairs from getting stuck beneath the skin. Our Revision® Gentle Buffing Cream gently removes dry skin, while polishing, moisturizing, and soothing the skin without the irritation.
Treatments
Acne facial – Focuses on soothing irritated skin while gently removing congestion in the pores. This facial works in conjunction with elements of a microdermabrasion treatment to help clear clogged pores while resurfacing the skin to tighten pores and improve skin texture.
Revitalize peel — This gentle peel is recommended for patients with sun damage, acne, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, or overall poor skin. It also improves the skin’s complexion, tone, and texture.
Sciton® MicroLaserPeel™ Skin Resurfacing — Uses pulses of light energy to gently remove acne, uneven skin texture, skin discoloration, and unwanted hair on any area of the body. Additionally, Sciton® works to help remove small blood vessels that contribute to redness and sun damage.
Laser hair removal — Can be performed on the face, back, underarms, legs, chest, and other problem areas. Each patient’s number of laser hair removal treatments needed for complete hair removal varies. However, most patients require four to six hair removal treatments. We recommend our patients undergo a series of eight treatments which should be spread out during a six-week time span.
