Welcome to Loveology University’s preview of our course on Transgender Male to Female: An Overview of Trans Women’s Experience. This course offers a comprehensive overview of the transgender woman’s experience, and how a person born physically as a man can transition to a woman’s gender assignment through feminizing hormone therapy, breast augmentation, hair removal, tracheal shaves and surgical reassignment procedures. The course covers the psychological and social aspects of gender dysphoria and transition, as well as trans female sexuality, sexual partners, dating and more.
What is Transgender?
- Transgender identified individuals are people who strongly feel that they ought to be the opposite sex.
- The body they were born with does not match their own inner belief and mental image of who they want to be.
- Transgender people also do not feel comfortable with the gender role society expects them to portray based on their biological body.
Male-to-Female Transgender
- There are many ways trans people choose to identify in the community.
- A male-to-female transgender or trans woman is an individual who was assigned male at birth, but identifies as a female.
- This individual may undergo a transition involving dressing in feminine clothes, hormone therapy, or surgery.
What is Gender Dysphoria?
Gender Dysphoria is “the condition of feeling one's emotional and psychological identity as male or female to be opposite to one's biological sex.”—Dictionary.com
Gender Dysphoria: The Invisible Handicap
Gender Dysphoria is a mental diagnosis outlined by the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual V, a reference book used by psychiatrists and other mental health professionals. Many if not all transgender individuals often disagree with this diagnostic label and do not see it as a part of a mental illness. Transgender individuals feel that they are victims of an invisible handicap, affected by emotional pain and turmoil that no one is able to see.
A common misconception about trans women is that if a trans woman is sexually attracted to man, that makes that individual gay. Gender identity is our own sense of understanding ourselves as men, women, or something else. Sexual orientation is defined by the sex of the individuals to whom we are erotically and emotionally attracted. Therefore, if a trans woman is sexually attracted to man, she may identify as straight.
Gender Identity is our perceived sense of who we are.
Sexual Orientation is who we are erotically and emotionally attracted to.
Sex is the biological sexual characteristics we were born with.
Is Therapy Right for Me?
Once individuals decide to explore their gender conflict, they often seek a gender therapist. While therapy is an individual choice, it is highly recommended to speak to a knowledgeable professional about gender issues.
Therapy can help work through feelings of shame, guilt, anger, and other repressed emotions and can help navigate transition at a pace suitable to each individual.
