Bikini waxing: it’s painful, time consuming, and expensive. While the 70s trend may be in full swing for 2015, for those of us who don’t enjoy the bush look, bikini waxing is an essential part of our beauty routine. If you’re tired of those pricey –and awkward– trips to the spa, there is an alternative: the #DIY bikini wax. But when hot wax and your nether-land is involved, it’s best to take some precautions.
Here are Vv Magazine’s 7 steps on a do-it-yourself bikini wax.
STEP 1: Purchase the necessary materials

Duh. Easiest way to do this quick is to get your hands on a bikini wax box set. Two birds, one applicator stick. Just make sure the wax set lists ‘”bikini” as one of the places for its use. You can go through the hassle of getting the wax, strips, and popsicle sticks yourself, but really, these wax sets are cheap, easy, and generally the safest way to go. Tip: if you have irritable skin, buy a box set made for sensitive skin or, if you can’t find one for your skin type, mix some baby oil into the wax and ta-da!
STEP 2: Shower
This step is simple. Get clean and rub-a-dub-dub before you do anything drastic. Hot water opens your pores and makes epilation easier.

STEP 3: Plan your shape and trim
Maybe you like the look of a landing strip, or maybe you’d rather be bare. Regardless, have a shape in mind before you start waxing a little here and there. Tip: if your beaver hasn’t been tamed for a long while (yes, we know, it happens), you may want to give it a good trim. This will help the waxing process go a lot faster.
STEP 4: Lay out materials and heat up wax.
Usually this is done in the microwave. Don’t own one? Warm it up on the stove.

STEP 5: Get naked and rip off some hair.
First check the temperature of the wax on the inside of your arm. You want it hot, but not third-degree-burns hot. After ensuring the temperature is safe, apply the wax to the area you want hair-free, in the direction your hair grows, using the popsicle stick. Leave the wax on for about 10 seconds and then place the cloth strips firmly on the wax. Leave the cloth sitting there for about five seconds and then proceed to rip the cloth off, pulling away from the direction your hair grows. This will most likely be painful but, if done right, it should leave you hair-free and happy! Continue this process until you have removed all the unwanted hair and are pleased with how it looks.

STEP 6: Apply baby oil and rinse.
After you’re done waxing, apply some baby oil and, using cool water to close to pores, rinse. This helps to get any leftover wax off and to soothe your skin. Tip: if you notice any stubborn hairs, this is the time to tweeze them off.
STEP 7: Enjoy your amazingly smooth lady bits!
