Chrissy Teigen is sharing good news (and selfies) with anyone who is unhappy with the thickness of their eyebrows.
The trend-setting model and cookbook author recently underwent eyebrow transplant surgery and shared her thicker, fuller brows with the world. Teigen’s doctor posted pictures of his famous client on Instagram, writing, “Eyebrows play a huge part of the facial aesthetic. They frame the eyes and can either be an asset to the eyes, or they can be the annoying part of your morning you have to spend ten minutes filling in.”
The reactions to Chrissy’s brow transplant were decidedly mixed and unexpectedly hairy. Haters called her out for spending money on vanity when others are struggling with the effects of the pandemic. Teigen took it all in stride. “Why are people so (expletive) riled up over any little thing I do?” she wrote. “You’re gonna give yourselves a heart attack.”
Whichever side of the Teigen eyebrow fence you’re on, Costhetics knows you want the facts about this trending procedure in the world of facial cosmetic surgery, hair transplantation, and aesthetic beauty in 2021 and beyond.
Why You Have Thin Brows
A variety of factors acting alone or together can rob your brows of their natural thick bushy beauty:
- Heredity
- Trauma (burns)
- Laser Hair Removal
- Ageing
Another key contributor is plucking. “I know too many people, entire generations, who… over-plucked brows as part of the trend,” says Dr Jason Diamond, the Beverly Hills plastic surgeon who worked with Teigen. “Teens, do not pluck them all off like I did,” the model warns fans in an article for Self magazine.
Why You Don’t Have to Have Thin Brows
The formal name for Teigen’s transformational procedure is eyebrow transplantation. Here’s a quick rundown on the steps involved:
- Create a plan – doctor and patient discuss the size, density, shape and the general aesthetics desired in the final result
- Draw a picture – doctor marks patient’s face using an eyebrow pencil
- X marks the spots – surgical marker is used to denote peaks, midlines, and margins of brows
- Harvest the hairs – tiny sacs known as hair follicles are taken from the patient’s scalp with the aid of a special machine and the hair is then trimmed. (Numbing agents are used to keep patients comfortable.)
- Place the hairs – angled incisions are made in the brow area, and the hairs are grafted into hair follicles.
The entire procedure can be completed in two to three hours. Swelling, discomfort, and light bruising may continue for up to a week. If needed, doctors can prescribe antibiotics, steroids, or painkillers to aid healing. Beyond that, the eyebrows will go through a shedding period. The surrounding skin may flake and/or peel and initially transplanted hair will fall out.
The results have a wonderfully natural appearance and are long-lasting too. It may surprise you to learn that new hairs may grow from those follicles. When that’s not the case, touch-ups over time can plush them out again.
The Secret of Teigen’s Eyebrow Transplant Success
The secret to any cosmetic surgery is the training, skill, and experience of the doctor. Teigen had full confidence in her provider as Dr Diamond had previously performed a buccal fat removal procedure for her. (In this procedure, the face is sculpted by removing the buccal fat from beneath the cheekbones.)
