Risks of Chemical Exfoliation
While generally very safe and effective, as with any aesthetic treatment, certain risks exist with chemical peels and can vary depending upon the strength of the formulation used, your natural skin tone, and your unique response factor.
While very rare, guests may experience post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (PIH) following a chemical peel. While we find that for some individuals the first treatment brings existing pigmentation closer to the surface of the skin and is effectively exfoliated with additional treatments, other individuals may experience the darkening of skin due to the inflammatory process of the treatment. Usually temporary in nature, PIH can nevertheless take many months to resolve. Clearstone will advise you of the application of post peel soothing balms with active ingredients intended to reduce inflammation and mitigate the chances of PIH formation.
Purging is sometimes seen in our guests, which is believed to be the body’s way of “pushing out” the dead skin as well as other debris from the treated area. Usually resembling acne, those that experience a purging effect will see the collection of white blood cells and other fluid with an associated superficial infection that usually self-resolves with easy care considerations. At times, we may need to provide additional medical attention to actively treat the infected areas with antibiotics. PIH can form following this purging effect, necessitating additional exfoliation treatments or a daily correction regime.
Some of the additional risks include allergic reactions to active ingredients, excessive burning to the treated area and hyper-sensitivity to heat or sun light following your treatment. Clearstone will provide a consultation prior to your chemical peel to thoroughly review the risks and benefits of chemical peels as well as to provide the necessary guidance to increase the effectiveness of treatments while reducing these risks.
