Sometimes, after making a new purchase, we honestly can’t believe we ever lived without it. Recently, someone asked, “What are some of your best quality-of-life purchases?” Here are the top 25 suggestions.
A Good Bed
“No one understands that once you get a good bed, your body will feel all confused for a couple of weeks because you’ve been torturing yourself for years.”
“Wife and I got a nectar mattress about a year ago and two pillows. What a phenomenal difference! We came from a cheap mattress with a memory foam top; this new mattress is incredible. I don’t sleep well anywhere else now.”
High-thread Bedsheets
“High thread-count sateen or flannel for winter, but percale for summer. It literally feels like a 5-star hotel every night.”
“Target Performance Sheets have a 400 count and are literally the best sheets I’ve ever bought, better than Belgian linen sheets, bamboo sheets or Egyptian cotton, etc.”
Weighted Blanket
“I had a huge, heavily weighted blanket last year, and it’s my greatest possession.”
“I got one for Christmas, and I already love it so much. I’m going to get a smaller one for the couch so I don’t have to lug the big one back and forth to bed.”
“I love my queen-size knitted one! I can twirl my fingers in between the knits. During summer, it lets air pass through. Whenever I sleep somewhere else, it feels incomplete without my weighted blanket.”
Knife Sharpener
“Can confirm. I just picked up a Work Sharp Precision Adjust Knife Sharpener, and I highly recommend getting one.’
“I just got the Ken Onion version and used to be a Whetstone guy. The power tool aspect can sharpen several knives in just minutes. They are incredibly sharp, too.”
Shower Head
“Someone mentioned a good showerhead, and that is something I have overlooked. Absolutely get a good showerhead!!”
“I just wanted a shower head with tons of little jets which cover quite a large surface, so I chose one with this feature. Some people prefer massaging jets. It’s up to your preferences. Just get a decent one that fills your requirements.”
Water Filter Jug
“As someone who moved to Egypt from America, a water filter pitcher is a MUST. I also would love to get one for my shower head.”
“My 1st apartment had water that came out very milky looking. I didn’t know how much of a difference the filter makes! I’ve been hooked on them since.”
“Agree. Filtered water is life-changing.”
Chef Knives
“A friend gave me two quality knives, and I still have both 28 years later. One, in particular, is known as ‘The Good Knife.’ It has no brand or markings but is the perfect size and weight for three different hand sizes, sharpens in just a few passes, and just makes cooking easier than any other knife I’ve held.”
“I second this; it makes everything easy. Food prep takes half the time.”
Matching Socks
“I bought a 30-pack of the same sock. They are pricey since it’s merino wool. I use them for every occasion, and laundry is easier.”
“If your socks are all identical, you don’t have to sort/pair them. Just pile them in the drawer and pull out 2 when you need them.”
Bidet Toilet
“Used one and never went back. Now, every toilet in my house, my in-laws’ house, and my parents’ house has one.”
“It’s so true; you can never go back. When we got those Japanese washlets with warm seats and warm water massage jets… it changed us.
“We can’t use public toilets anymore and can’t wait for the first spray after vacation.”
CPAP Machine
“No more loud snoring. No more dreading going to bed, knowing I’ll just choke-snort myself awake every 7-10 minutes and get up in the morning feeling as if I got hit by a bus. No more dragging myself through my day in a haze.”
“This is 100% true. Sleep apnea is serious, plus they help your heart too.”
Self-cleaning Litter Box
“I’ve had mine for about seven years now. Yes, it was a large purchase for my income, but I still feel it was worth it. I am able to keep the house cleaner and spend far less time cleaning the litter box. I will be purchasing another when it’s needed.”
“I have cats and a healthy dose of depression, which aren’t related on the surface.. but it helps keep things clean when I’m feeling unmotivated.”
O-cedar Mop
“The ones with the spinning bucket. It makes my floor so much cleaner, and the mop heads are replaceable, so it will last forever.”
“Just bought one, and I agree! We’ve bought all kinds of floor-cleaning gadgets and mops over the years, and this one cleans the best. We used it the other night right after using the Wet Jet, and we were disgusted by how much filth the Swiffer left behind!”
Mid-range Mobile Phone
“I moved from a budget to a midrange phone, and honestly, the experience of using the phone is so much better. I don’t think I’d ever spring for thousands of bucks, though.”
“I learned my lesson the hard way by buying a cheap one. I had to ditch it and get myself a Samsung phone and a Huawei tablet. The phone has been running for more than three years without any problems at all.”
Home Art
“Visual art for my home helps me feel more at ease, as opposed to blank walls.”
“Whenever I move into a new apartment, it doesn’t feel complete until I’ve hung up all the art I own. Color and interest are so much more welcoming and make me feel happy.”
Quality Shoes
“Hokas are worth every penny. Believe the hype.”
“I have fallen in love with Onclouds. I didn’t realize what a difference there can be.”
“Can confirm. I worked in a sports store for a few years, and our best-seller was OnClouds. They even got shoes for the employees of the store once every four months! The close second was Hoka, and the third best was Saucony.”
Robot Vacuum
“We have two Siberian huskies, and it’s changed my life! We run it every day, and then I only need to drag the big vacuum out once a week.”
“I have two cats and can say the same. It’s not something we would have ever bought for ourselves, but my MIL got us a Eufy robot vac, and we absolutely loved it. It died after a few years, and we couldn’t live without it, so we got a Roomba.”
Extended Phone-chargers
“Those are the bomb, plus getting ones that are “right angle” so that length of the cord is perpendicular to the length of your phone has made a huge difference for me too. I have a lot fewer frayed or bent cords now.”
“Ten-foot phone charger cords have drastically improved my life.”
Hair-Removal
“I got laser hair removal on every part of my body I used to shave! Best thing EVER!”
“I had Brazilian laser removal, and although it started to hurt somewhat during the last few sessions, the outcome made any pain worth it for me! No more ingrown hairs!!”
“From my understanding, the electrolysis tool works by looking for hair follicles to zap. So it works best for dark hair on light skin.”
Dyson Cordless Vaccum
“My wife and I agree. But cordless vacuums are not all the same. We own a Dyson Animal V10 and a Shark. The Dyson is so much better that they are not even in the same league.”
“Funny, I had a Dyson stick vac that I hated and replaced it with a Shark, which I absolutely love. But I 100% agree on a quality stick vac!”
Properly-fitted Bras
“Chantelle is my favorite, and I wear a 36DD. Their store even has a seamstress that can do alterations. It’s really important to find the proper fit!”
“Proper fitting bras are amazing! I went to Nordstrom and got a fitting. The $80 price tag was worth it. I can tell when I wear a different bra, even if it’s the same size. They are not made the same.”
Water Carriers
“This sounds silly, but they’ve improved my quality of life so much. I bought two from Amazon, and now I actually stay hydrated. I keep one of them in the fridge and one of them out to drink. When I’ve finished drinking one bottle, I refill it and swap them.”
“YES! I bought a Camelback to wear at work; now I’m drinking 2-4 liters of water a day. I turn my head to the left, see the nozzle, and sip. Makes me poop like a dream, my skin is better, and my eyes are even brighter.”
E-bike
“It is amazing how much it improved my mood! I used to be all sweaty and angry by the time I got to work. The e-bike completely erased that from my life. I don’t even care if it’s windy now; I just pedal on and let the engine do all the work.”
“Every person I’ve talked to about their e-bike has been happy with their choice, regardless of the brand or type. Get one you think will suit you. You won’t regret it!”
Heated Mattress
“The mattress pad has made this winter bearable. The stupidly high price of electricity means I can’t heat the house, but at least I’ll be able to crawl into a warm bed at night.”
“On particularly cold mornings, I’ll crank the heat up to max for a few minutes, so I’ll overheat. Makes it easier to jump into the slippers and robe.”
Waterproof Speaker
“I’ve got a waterproof Bluetooth speaker, and showers are so much better with my favorite music or podcasts.”
“Why not have a shower playlist and favorite podcasts, and continue listening during shaving and/or breakfast? Make it part of your morning routine.”
“I go boating a lot. This is the way.”
Wake-up Light
“Philips wake-up light is the best invention ever.”
“I love mine. I only regret not splurging and getting their top model. I wake up immediately to the light, usually about 20 minutes before the alarm. Apparently, with the one you can connect to your phone, you can tell the program how early the light starts before the alarm.”
