Brazilian laser hair removal entails using a laser to permanently reduce the amount of hair in the pubic area. This includes the bikini line, vulva, perineum, and groin, the entire area covered by a bikini bottom, and any pubic hair that might peak about from under a bikini.
Specific lasers safely target hair follicles but do not burn the skin. These lasers are more efficient at treating dark, coarse hair than fine white or gray hair. Multiple treatments are needed. Pain is minimal. There is essentially no downtime or limitations afterward. The laser hair removal treatment is performed in an office setting. Intermittent retreatment may be necessary if new follicles begin to grow with aging or if previously lasered follicles recover.
Not all patients want to treat the entire area, and many prefer to leave a neatly patterned patch of hair according to an outline that they choose. The optimal type of laser for hair removal will depend on skin type. Of course, treatment efficacy tends not just on the technology utilized but on the laser hair removal technician’s training, experience, and skill.
Is Brazilian Laser Hair Removal Painful?
Most patientsdifferent patients
Some patients compare the sensation of being treated as similar to being snapped with a tiny, hot rubber band or a warm pinprick. Most patients also feel that Brazilian laser treatment is significantly less painful than Brazilian waxing.
After the treatment, there is generally no discomfort. The skin may feel sensitive to the touch, like a mild sunburn, generally lasting just a few days. Most patients use a moisturizer like aloe vera for a couple of days after treatment.
Which lasts longer, Waxing or Laser?
Waxing generally lasts 3 to 6 weeks. A series of laser hair reduction treatments will generally have permanent hair reduction but require intermittent retreatment to control no hair growth. Retreatment is done every couple of years but varies between patients.
Since waxing pulls out the hair roots, it will last as long as it takes for new hair shafts to regrow. Therefore, waxing sessions are commonly repeated every 3 to 6 weeks, and maintenance treatments must be repeated indefinitely to keep unwanted hair away.
Multiple laser hair removal sessions are required, usually spaced about 6 weeks apart, to achieve permanent hair removal, but the effect then lasts long-term with the expectation that some regrowth will occur, necessitating intermittent retreatment. This is in part because new follicles may begin to grow hair as we age, but it is likely that some of the laser-treated hair follicles ultimately regrow.
How many Treatments are Required for Brazilian Laser Hair Removal?
The most common number of hair removal treatments initially is 6, usually spaced 6 weeks or so apart to capture different hair follicles at different stages of growth to minimize the potential to miss hair follicles.
At any given time, about 20% of our hair follicles lie dormant, temporarily without hair growth, as part of the normal lifecycle of the hair follicle. Therefore, laser treatments have to be intermittently repeated, generally at intervals of 6 weeks or so, to capture the hair growth cycle of follicles that were dormant at prior treatments. In addition, retreatment can eliminate follicles that recovered after previously being partially damaged.
Typically, 6 treatment sessions are used to optimize hair reduction. This may vary significantly between patients and even practices. Patients with light skin color and light hair colors typically require more treatments since darker hair absorbs the laser light more effectively. When the light is absorbed, the hair follicles are heated, burning, and destroying it. This is less effective with lighter hair. Gray and blond hair typically cannot be treated successfully.
Long-term, intermittent retreatment is necessary as new follicles start producing hair with age or as previously treated follicles recover. There is also a vast amount of variability regarding how often patients want to repeat treatment. This can vary by the site on the body, skin type, how hirsute a patient is at baseline, and patient preference.
