The Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X is the first (and only, right now) FDA-cleared laser available for home use. It’s also very easy to use. I’ve now been using the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X for several months. As you probably know, I have very fair skin and very dark hair naturally. I’m not very hairy, as the dark hair on my body is limited to my bikini zone, underarms, and from the knees down on my legs. The hair on my arms is very light and the hair on my upper thighs is blonde.
From my understanding of how the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X works, the higher the contrast between your hair and skin, the better the laser will be able to reduce the hair. However, keep in mind that laser hair removal is not permanent. It should provide up with a reduction of up to 70% of the hair. Tria’s website says that if your body hair is blonde, white, grey or red, this laser is not for you. It also says if you have a darker skintone, this laser is not safe for your skin. Darker skintones run a higher risk of skin injury.
The way I use it is by putting the bottom of the device against my leg to allow it to get a reading of my skintone. Then I proceed to use it on the area that I want to see the hair reduced. As I mentioned, I’ve been targeting my underarms and the strays on my boobs. You need to do quite a lot of pulses per area of skin – about 200 pulses under each arm, for each treatment. And it does help to overlap where the laser is pointed on your skin. I also think I wasn’t overlapping it enough the first few times that I used it. Depending on how distracted I am, this takes me about 15-20 minutes, so it’s not much of a time commitment.
I have seen a reduction in the hair under my arms, as well as in the few strays on my boobs that I have. It seems like my hair is growing back more sparsely. However, I’m still stuck using level 1 because my skin is too sensitive to go up to level 2. So I’m going to be using this for a few more months until I get to the desired amount of hair reduction. I wish that I could use the higher levels, because I think I’d see better, faster results. Check out my friend Miranda’s experience with using the laser on her legs!
Overall, I think if you like the idea of using a laser at home and your skin type and hair type is compatible, you will get good results with the Tria Hair Removal Laser 4X. You just need to be willing to put the time into using it and follow the instructions. It also helps if you can use the higher settings, which I can’t.
