It’s no secret that a woman’s hormones change dramatically and constantly during pregnancy. How they affect each woman is going to be different, but change they will.
When it comes to hair, many women report that hair comes in thicker, especially in places where it isn’t wanted and can get thinner on the head.
You don’t necessarily have to do anything about this hair as you probably have more on your mind than how people see you while pregnant. However, if you feel self conscious then make sure you are removing your hair safely.
In this article, I will go over several hair removal systems and let you know if you should or shouldn’t do them while pregnant.
Laser hair removal
This system is really up in the air. As things are currently, there haven’t been many studies to determine how safe or unsafe it is to get laser hair removal while pregnant.
Basically, you should err on the side of caution and not bother with it. Some clinics like LaserAll won’t do these treatments while you’re pregnant.
You should be able to have it done when breastfeeding, however since there are no chemicals to pass on through the milk.
Electrolysis
Like laser hair removal, electrolysis has not undergone any studies to determine its safety level. One big difference, however, is that it is much more invasive than laser treatments.
A metal probe is inserted under the skin to where the roots of the hair are located. Then an electrical charge is used to kill the hair. Since it is more invasive, chances are it is not as safe as it should be to warrant using this system while pregnant.
Shaving
Shaving your legs and underarms is no issue when shaving. It is as safe as can be.
What is less safe is shaving your bikini. No matter what, if you choose to do this you need to use a fresh blade as a used one may have bacteria on it. This is obviously an area that would be dangerous to become infected.
Even with a fresh razor, make sure to use a disinfectant after in case you break the skin or end up with ingrown hair.
Most doctors will recommend that you don’t have your genitals when you are pregnant, but it does come down to personal choice and what you are comfortable with.
Depilatory creams
Once again, there is no science to say that these creams are not safe to use while pregnant. What is for sure is that they are very strong and contain a lot of harsh chemicals.
Barium sulfide powder and calcium thioglycolate are used to dissolve the hair so it can be simply wiped away. These are really awful to breath in and may cause respiratory problems in some women. An allergic reaction may have other consequences that make it not worth using these creams.
Conclusion
If you need hair removed from your lips or face, then try tweezing as it is non invasive and no chemicals needed.
Other areas can likely wait until the baby arrives so you don’t risk any unknown issues.
