Regular waxing has many advantages. It leaves skin feeling soft and silky, reduces the amount of body hair, and makes thick hair thinner over time. Yet, many people avoid having their hair waxed for fear that it will be a painful, miserable experience. Use these tips to help you make your hair waxing experience more effective and less uncomfortable.
- Find an experienced spa technician – Going to a reputable salon that hires experienced aestheticians will ensure you are being waxed by someone who knows how to minimize the uncomfortable feelings associated with waxing.
- Pre-waxing oil – Make sure the technician applies a layer of pre-waxing oil to the area you want waxed. If the technician is using a hard wax, pre-waxing oil will keep the wax from sticking to your skin and will only grab the hair.
- Do not wax when skin is sensitive – Skin can be exceptionally sensitive right after a tanning session or when your skin is sunburned. Women can also experience skin that is more sensitive during the fourth week of their menstrual cycle. You should not waxing during these times to avoid skin irritation.
- Do not shave before waxing – Leave the hair you want to wax at least ¼ inch long so the wax can adhere to it and pull it out of the hair follicle. On the other hand, your hair should not be too long. If it is, trim it before your waxing to get the best results.
- Healing post-waxed skin – If your skin has red marks or becomes irritated during waxing, use a cold compress to ease the sting and minimize irritation.
- Let your skin heal – Skin is sensitive and more vulnerable to infection after experiencing a wax treatment. Let your skin heal for at least a day before going into a pool, ocean, or sauna. You should also avoid using body washes or lotions that contain alcohol. Giving your skin time to heal will help you keep your skin smooth and rash free.
- When not to wax – People with sensitive skin, acne, allergies, diabetes, varicose veins or poor circulation should consult with a dermatologist to determine the best method of hair removal to minimize irritation and discomfort.
- Certain medications – Keep in mind that the following medications may make your skin more sensitive and easier to tear: Retin-A, Renova, Differin or Isotretinoin.
- Other skin issues – Avoid waxing areas of your skin that are affected by warts, pimples, moles, rashes, or is peeling or broken.
- Waxing at home – Waxing at home provides a quick solution when you need a quick wax in between your regular wax treatments. Always remember to follow the directions carefully and allow ample time for a proper waxing.
