Waxing is a popular hair removal method that can leave your skin smooth for weeks at a time. But, to avoid issues and get the best results from your waxing appointment, it’s important to follow a few simple aftercare tips.
Heat Avoidance
Avoid hot showers or baths and saunas for 24 hours post-waxing. This will help to avoid irritation and redness. This means you may have to do some advance planning if you have a workout scheduled or other activities that require being in a hot environment. Ignoring this aftercare tip can result in a painful or even embarrassing situation, so be sure to plan your esthetician visit accordingly.
Cleaning
Gently cleanse the area with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water. Do not use harsh soaps or scrub the skin too vigorously and avoid anything too perfumy. Pat the skin dry with a soft towel. This is a good time to inspect the area for any missed spots or skin reactions.
Massaging Scrub
Gently exfoliate the waxed area a few times a week beginning 3-4 days after your appointment. Incorporate a soothing massage into the process to help improve circulation and decrease any soreness. This will help to prevent ingrown hairs and keep your skin smooth. Be sure to use a gentle exfoliator, as anything too harsh can irritate the skin. Look for an exfoliating scrub that contains small beads or granules. Avoid using loofahs or other rough materials on your skin as this can irritate it.
Proper Protection
Wearing loose-fitting clothing and staying out of the sun are important aftercare steps to follow, especially if you’ve had a bikini or leg waxing. It’s best to avoid tight clothing that can rub against the skin and cause painful chafing or ingrown hairs. Since the skin is more sensitive after waxing, it’s important to protect it from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when spending time outdoors regardless of how recent your waxing took place.
You also want to avoid touching or picking at the waxed area. This can lead to irritation and infection. You can apply a soothing, non-perfumed lotion or cream to the area to help calm the skin. A cold compress can be helpful if you experience any pain or swelling.
Reactions
It’s normal for the skin to appear pink and slightly swollen after waxing, but if you experience anything more than that, such as intense pain, pus-filled bumps, or bleeding, contact your esthetician or healthcare provider right away. These could be signs of an infection.
Now that you’ve had your waxing appointment, you’re likely looking and feeling fabulous! Follow these steps to round out your routine, and reach out to your esthetician should you have any questions or concerns.
