We all have unique hair types. Some people’s hair is thin and straight, others thick and curly. In some cases, there is hair in parts of the body where it just doesn’t look good. For example, many men begin to notice hair growing on their shoulders and backs as they get older. Some grow hair in their ears or on their noses. These aren’t the only instances of having hair where it isn’t desirable. Hair on the legs, arms, or face can also feel like it doesn’t belong. This is why we spend so much time and money to remove it. If you are tired of the rut of shaving and want to know more about laser hair removal, continue reading.
Getting Ready for Laser Hair Removal
There isn’t much to do before laser hair removal sessions. Primarily, your provider will advise you to avoid too much sun exposure. It’s not like you can’t wear shorts when you go outside, just don’t lay by the pool for hours. Having a tan when you are going through laser hair removal treatments can diminish the effects of each session. Also, it can increase the risk of skin irritation after the appointment.
Another step you should take before a laser hair removal appointment is to shave. This can be done the night before or morning of your session and it should be done before every session if any hair has regrown (which it probably will). Shaving leaves hair in the follicle to absorb laser energy but limits how much heat is absorbed, decreasing the risk of discomfort. We also suggest wearing loose, soft clothing for your appointments. This lets your skin breathe and limits fabric from pressing or rubbing on the area.
Laser Hair Removal Treatment
You may need to remove certain items of clothing depending on the area you are having laser hair removal. If necessary, your provider may provide you with a sheet or robe to cover yourself as treatment is being performed. You will wear special goggles during the treatment to protect your eyes from the laser light. The treatment is delivered through a small handpiece. This is “stamped” against the skin. With every press, laser light enters the hair follicles. This vaporizes strands of hair and transfers as heat into the walls of follicles. Large areas take about an hour. Smaller areas like the upper lip or beard may take only a few minutes.
After Laser Hair Removal
The absorption of laser energy into the hair follicles will cause temporary redness. The skin may swell a little, too. These common side effects usually resolve within 24 hours. Being that the tissue beneath the skin is heated, you may also feel like you’ve got a minor sunburn. If this feels uncomfortable, you can apply cool compresses for a few minutes at a time.
We may be staying in more often, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a great idea to get laser hair removal to ease up your grooming routine! To learn more, call our Westport, CT office at (203) 226-3600.
