Laser hair removal is one of the best options available for anyone looking for a safe and efficient way to remove unwanted facial hair. Although you may need to have several treatment sessions, the procedure is typically quick, with only minor discomfort experienced during and after the treatment. When preparing for treatment, always follow the advice and instructions of your dermatologist, before, during and after the procedure.
Step 1
Give at least several weeks notice when making an appointment for laser removal of hair on the upper lip.
Step 2
So that you have an accurate idea of what to expect, talk about your goals and any concerns with your dermatologist.
Step 3
You will need to give your dermatologist a full medical history which may include taking photographs. Mention any serious conditions, scars, allergies and prior surgery.
Step 4
Your dermatologist will also need to know about all the medication you are taking, including minerals or vitamin supplements, especially those with beta-carotene, as well as over the counter medication and anything prescribed to you. If you are using any skin care products, your dermatologist will need to know, especially if these require avoiding exposure to the sun.
Step 5
Not everybody tolerates the laser hair treatment well; to make sure you don’t have any severe reaction you should ask your dermatologist to do a patch test. It involves treating a small area to see how well you respond, before treating a larger area.
Step 6
About 4 to 6 weeks before your laser hair removal treatment starts, stop using any tanning salons, tanning beds or bronzers. If you are exposed to the sun, make sure your sunscreen has an SPF of at least 15. Fair skin is much more suitable for laser hair removal.
Step 7
About 2 to 4 weeks before your treatment starts, don’t remove any hair from your upper lip by any method, including mechanical epilators, chemical solutions, tweezers, thread or wax.
Step 8
You will see better laser hair removal results if you have some stubble there when treatment is carried out, meaning you shouldn’t trim or shave your upper lip at least three days before treatment begins.
Step 9
Use a mild cleanser, but no make-up or moisturizers, to wash your face immediately before your appointment time.
Step 10
If your dermatologist advises it, you can apply a local cream designed to numb the treatment area, before your appointment.
Things You’ll Need:
- Mild facial cleanser
- Sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 15
- If prescribed, topical numbing cream
- Veet Wax Strips
Tips
To reduce discomfort, ask your doctor about taking acetaminophen, ibuprofen or another over the counter pain reliever, before your treatment appointment. You may have to postpone your treatment if you have a cold when the treatment is scheduled; anti-viral medication may also be needed to fight any cold sores.
