Acne scars are depressions and raised areas on the skin left behind after an inflamed pimple breaks the barriers of a pore. There are two common types of acne scars: hypertrophic or keloid scars and atrophic or depressed scars. Hypertrophic scars are raised tissue and atrophic scars are depressions.

Surgery The ablation or alteration of any human tissue by any means including but not limited to the use of sharp surgery, heat, cold, abrasion, laser, chemicals, injection/placement of substances subcutaneous, or the use of FDA approved devices that can only be initially purchased by physicians is the practice of medicine as defined in Title 59 O.S. Section 492. Lasers are instruments of surgery. No matter what type of laser is being utilized, a physician involved in the process should following [sic] these guidelines.
If the physician is utilizing an Oklahoma licensed nurse, [RN, LPN, APN (advance practice nurse) or APN with prescriptive authority] and IF they are functioning within the scope of their practice act, then the physician may delegate any of the defined medical services to that licensed nurse under general supervision, which may not require the physician to be on-site. It is imperative that the physician contact the Oklahoma Board of Nursing (405-962-1800) to find out the nurse’s scope of practice and level of physician supervision required.
The use of a Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, (hereinafter “laser”), has been declared within the scope of medicine and surgery; as such it is a medical act and is not within the scope of practice for a qualified advanced practice nurse to order and/or delegate laser hair removal treatment, even if the advanced practice nurse has prescriptive authority.
Once an Oklahoma licensed physician has performed a medical evaluation on the patient, a laser hair removal treatment order may be delegated to a licensed nurse. The prescriptive order should include the following: type of laser; the depth of the penetration of the laser beam; the wattage or strength of the laser beam; the circumference of the laser beam (spot size); wave length and pulse beam;
Laser hair removal procedures are performed upon the order of and under the supervision of an Oklahoma licensed physician.
-The Oklahoma licensed physician has determined laser power parameters and areas to be treated.
Informed written consent has been obtained from the patient.
-A written policy and procedure is maintained by the employer.
-The employer is responsible for adhering to local, state and federal regulations regarding the use of laser technology.
-Documentation of the nurses’ satisfactory completion of instruction, supervised clinical practice, and evidence of
current competency is on file with the employer.
-Supervised practice of laser techniques should be first
carried out using inanimate objects (such as fruit,vegetables), before initial application of these techniques to humans.
