Waxing, shaving or epilating are just a few of the things we go through to achieve smooth, hairless legs. But going through the pain and with the ongoing maintenance, it can become daunting and time consuming which is why more and more people are choosing a more permanent solution to hair removal.
What is IPL hair removal?
We all hear about it but not a lot of us know or understand what IPL hair removal actually is. Is it just another laser treatment? Is it effective? Is it a permanent solution to hair removal? These are just a couple of questions we get in regards to IPL treatments. We’re here to explain a little bit more on the service to help you to understand better what it really is and its effects.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, to simply explain it, IPL is a form of hair reduction therapy that uses intense light energy to reduce the hair growth. It targets hair pigments through multiple wavelengths via intense light therapy. This light energy then turns into heat and damages the hair follicle and thereby reducing the production of hair.
What is the difference between IPL and Laser?
The main difference between an IPL treatment and a laser treatment is that IPL simply reduces hair regrowth and is a less permanent solution to hair removal. A variety light waves are used within IPL where the intensity is a lot lower than a laser treatment. Whereas a laser procedure produces one powerful wave meaning thicker, darker hairs are targeted more effectively thus providing more permanent hair removal.
Benefits of IPL
So if laser is more effective and longer lasting, why should you go for an IPL treatment? There a few advantages of IPL over laser.
- Treatment can be altered depending on skin type, texture, hair colour and thickness.
- It is a more affordable service
- IPL can also be used to treat skin problems such as skin tags and broken veins thanks to the multiple waves that are produced
- There is less of a risk of damaging the skin
How to Prep for an IPL treatment?
Before your first IPL appointment, you’ll need to have a skin consultation and a patch test to see how the treatment will react to your skin. We also recommend that you avoid any hair removal methods especially waxing and tweezing for at least 2 weeks prior to the treatment. This is because, waxing and tweezing weaken the hair and cause it to break which may mean your treatment will be less effective.
