Thinking about getting laser hair removal?
Firstly, you won’t regret it. The only thing better than taking a dip in the ocean on a hot summer’s day is the carefree knowledge that there’ll be no surprise stubble on your underarms, legs or bikini area.
Secondly, there are a few things you should know before your laser hair removal appointment. Take note of these tips to ensure it’s as easy and breezy as possible…
#1 Shave to prep
Unlike waxing appointments, laser hair removal sessions require you to shave pre-appointment (approximately 12-24 hours beforehand). This allows the laser to target the hair follicle better, administering heat to damage the follicle and discourage further growth. You can also shave in between appointments and this won’t have any effect on the results, but avoid any kind of other hair removal which pulls hair from the root.
#2 Be wary of sun exposure
For safety reasons, direct sun exposure should be avoided in treatment areas before and after your laser appointment. It’s likely you’ll be asked the question when you attend your appointment and if signs of sun exposure are evident, you may not be able to have your session that day. This is because the laser targets pigment (like that found in the hair follicle) and if there’s increased pigment (from tan or sunburn) in the skin, there can be a higher risk of burn.
#3 Hold the fake tan
The same rule applies to fake tan. Although it’s certainly a safe sun-free option when it comes to achieving a sun-kissed glow, it’s still a no-go for laser appointments. So ensure you leave yourself enough time for it to fade and be removed before your session.
#4 Press pause on peels
If you’re having laser hair removal on your face (we’re partial to a moustache zap ourselves), it is recommended to avoid chemical peels or laser resurfacing treatments at least four weeks before your treatment. Freshly unveiled skin will be more partial to sensitivity, particularly in an already sensitive area like the upper lip.
#5 Tone down the pain
Many describe the sensation of laser hair removal as being similar to a hot flick with a rubber band. It’s simply part of the process, but you can experience less pain and still get the results you want by applying a skin numbing cream like Emla®*.
Emla cream needs to be applied at least one hour before your hair removal session. Follow the instructions when it comes to application; apply to clean, dry skin and press out enough cream for the area, but don’t spread out the cream.
For large body areas and procedures such as laser hair removal, the maximum dose is 60g (two 30g tubes) spread over an area no larger than 600cm2 (the size of an A4 piece of paper), for a minimum of one hour and maximum five hours. The 5g Emla cream comes with two occlusive dressings to help keep the cream secured.
Emla can also be used to help prevent the sensation of pain during common needle procedures, superficial skin surgery and minor superficial cosmetic skin procedures.
#6 Avoid deodorant
Skin should be clean and free from product residue before your laser hair removal session. This includes deodorant, but if you’re heading to your appointment after work or during a lunch break, you can remove it once you arrive at the clinic with a wipe.
#7 Be ready for repeats
