For women, having smooth and hair-free skin is not just for beauty but for hygiene purposes, too. Because of this, women resort to different ways to remove hair on the face, legs, and underarms. There are simple methods like shaving, tweezing, hair removal creams and wax and also clinical procedures like laser hair removal. However, there are also more natural ways to remove hair and one of them is using the spice turmeric.
Causes of unwanted hair growth
Some circumstances contribute to the growth of excess hair on different areas of the body. These are usually related to the menstrual cycle, side effects of certain medications and any changes in the body’s production of hormones. More often than not, hormones are the main culprit. For both men and women, our bodies contain estrogen and testosterone but women’s bodies supposedly generate more estrogen while men’s bodies create more testosterone. When the testosterone level in a woman’s body increases, it can lead to more unwanted hair.
Why Turmeric For Hair Removal?
Usually used in cooking, turmeric has a distinct flavor and is one of the main ingredients in curry, providing it with a delicious taste and its trademark yellow color. Turmeric is also full of nutrients that gives the body more health benefits such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.
For hair removal, turmeric is less likely to irritate the skin compared to other commercial products. Aside from that, regular use of turmeric controls the growth of hair, gradually making the hair strands thinner.
Turmeric Hair Removal Recipes
Here are two of the best recipes using turmeric for getting rid of facial or body hair.
Basic Turmeric Paste:
Prepare around three teaspoons of turmeric powder and a teaspoon of milk. Stir these together to form a paste. Smear the paste on your face or body, one area at a time, and making certain you follow the direction your hair is growing. Allow the paste to dry, usually about 20 to 30 minutes. Once it’s dry, get a dry face towel and slowly and lightly rub the paste off your skin. The paste will come off together with the unwanted hair.
Turmeric Exfoliant Scrub:
Prepare a tablespoon of salt, half a cup of milk, half a cup of gram flour or chickpea flour, and a couple of tablespoons of turmeric powder. Stir together to create a thick and smooth paste. Massage the paste on your face lightly, moving in small circles as you go. Continue massaging for a maximum of 10 minutes to let the paste dry. You can then wash off the paste with water.
What to watch out for
It should be noted that the color of turmeric is quite strong so that it has a tendency to leave a yellowish stain on your skin. If this happens, just soak a cotton ball with some milk and wipe this on the area. Also, remember that turmeric works well against hairs with a light to moderate texture but it might not produce the same results for thicker hair.
