Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival celebrates decade of bringing music to Central Plains
Cottonwood Acres was the spot for the Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival's 10th anniversary, and those running the show believe it's the best it's ever been. The festival focuses on attendees immersing themselves in nature while enjoying a variety of folk, roots, indie, pop, country, blues, alternative, and other genre fusions. Festival coordinator Linda Omichinski says there's more to it than that, however, as the workshops and children's activities are what make Whoop & Hollar so loved. "There was one couple in particular; one of them came up to us and said, 'Thank you so much for doing this. I don't look forward to much in life, but I look forward to Whoop & Hollar,'" shares Omichinski. "Another one came up and said she had an almost spiritual experience, it was very healing, and they felt immense joy." Omichinski adds that they have three stages throughout the festival grounds: the main stage, a side-stage barn for upcoming talent, and an area for children's activities. The area also allows for great moments between performers and attendees. There were also art installations throughout the grounds that helped some of the audience get away from the hustle and bustle of real life and focus on where they were, which led to a better experience. "All of a sudden, you would see one of our performers plus one of our volunteers doing Tai Chi," explains Omichinski. "In the park, we had a conga line just spontaneously happen. What is really key about Whoop & Hollar is that we accept everyone, and people get a chance to express themselves and be who they are." As the sun sets on the 10th Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival, Omichinski extended a heartfelt thank you to the 65 volunteers who helped make the show possible.Local News Local Sports

Fun With Family Day Festival sees great crowd for ninth edition
The annual Fun With Family Day Festival at Our Farm Greenhouses in Portage la Prairie was on Sunday, and saw a great crowd come out over the course of the day. Shea Doherty, the Operations Manager with Our Farm, says, while it's not their event per se, they are glad to be hosting it again. "This festival is done by Concerts on Request and hosted by Our Farm Greenhouses. Our Farm doesn't have anything to do with it anymore, aside from hosting it, which, we're honoured to do that. But it has now become Concert on Request which is doing the event, and they're doing an amazing job at it." Doherty explains that the event is something they are excited to put on every year. "We had a bouncy castle, a thrill zone, like, we had a zip line. We had two concerts going on, an 'A' stage and a 'B' stage. We've got food trucks, a petting zoo; what more could you want?" The announced attendance was well over a thousand people, and Doherty notes that having the festival is about bringing families together and enjoying time together. "It's absolutely amazing. We're putting this event on for the community in hopes that the community will respond and be able to come out and take part. So, just being able to help put an event on like this for the community, that's what we wanted. That's the heart of Bhryden Doherty and Concerts on Request for Fun With Family Day Festival, that's what it's about, is the community. So, to have people showing up, that's what we want." The event featured several worship artists, including Brooke Nicholls, Nathan Keys, Carine Bado, Jordan St. Cyr, who hails from Niverville, and Rend Collective, a band that tours internationally, originally from Northern Ireland. Doherty shares what made this year's band lineup such a hit. "Every one of these acts that Bhryden has got here today, some of them are bands that wouldn't even come to a community like this, and we're excited! Rend Collective, the headliner, to be the only Canadian stop here, we've got to give a huge shoutout to Rend Collective for making that choice and giving people a great evening of just being community. That's what it's about." The festival's ninth edition saw the greenhouse property filled with friendly faces taking in the evening concert and fireworks.Local News
