Lumenis LightSheer® is an advanced laser technology, utilized by California Skin Institute providers to help patients get rid of unwanted hair.1 This laser model uses a diode laser to penetrate into the skin and target the melanin-rich hair follicles to reduce hair growth in the future. Though the Lumenis LightSheer® has been used to help many patients and can deliver dramatic outcomes, this device is just one of many laser hair removal technologies that can be administered by California Skin Institute providers. To schedule your LightSheer consultation, please contact one of the California Skin Institute practices listed below, or schedule your appointment online!
How the Lumenis LightSheer® Works
The Lumenis LightSheer® is able to stop the growth of unwanted hair long-term by targeting the hair follicle. This is achieved by targeting the melanin inside the follicles and heating it up until follicle damage occurs.
Although the Lumenis LightSheer® can be used for many hair colors, it is most effective for darker hair, which is more abundant in melanin. Unfortunately, dyeing the hair will not help make the treatment more effective, as the dye will not increase melanin in the follicle.
What the Lumenis LightSheer® Treats
The primary use for Lumenis LightSheer® is laser hair removal. This laser is gentle enough to target virtually any part of the body, including the chest, back, armpits, arms, and bikini area, among others.
Is Lumenis LightSheer® Safe?
Yes, the Lumenis LightSheer® is a safe device, especially when the procedure is administered by experienced providers at California Skin Institute. Our laser treatment providers undergo rigorous training with all laser devices, including the LightSheer®, and take all of the necessary precautions to ensure patient safety during treatment.
Further, the LightSheer® features a specialized cooling technology, which helps prevent discomfort during treatment.
How Long do Treatment Results Last?
Once the follicle has been damaged with the laser energy, hair growth will be significantly reduced. However, it is possible that some touch-up treatments may be needed from time to time, to address any hair follicles that may have experienced very long resting stages and were therefore not captured in the original treatment sessions.
What to Expect During Treatment?
During your Lumenis LightSheer® treatment, your California Skin Institute provider will glide the tip of the LightSheer® handpiece across the treatment area. As the tip is moved around the skin, the laser will deliver powerful bursts of energy, which will damage the hair follicles, but will leave the surrounding tissue unharmed.
A typical California Skin Institute patient will need multiple treatments to remove the majority of the unwanted hair. Multiple treatments are needed because hair grows in cycles, and at any given moment, some of your hair follicles are in the growth phase, while others are resting. As melanin concentrations are greatest in follicles that are actively growing hair, multiple sessions are necessary to ensure that the vast majority of the follicles have been treated during their growth phase.
Lumenis LightSheer® Side Effects
Laser hair removal with the Lumenis LightSheer® is tolerated well by the majority of California Skin Institute patients and causes very little discomfort. Many patients are surprised how much more comfortable this procedure is than traditional hair removal methods, especially when compared to painful waxing sessions.
