Laser hair removal is the intelligent way to get rid of unwanted hair; it’s a far more permanent solution than shaving or waxing, and leaves you with silky smooth skin. No ingrown hairs; no shaving rash; no excruciating ripping out of hairs.
It’s important to be treated by someone very experienced, who really knows what they’re doing. All laser hair removal treatments at our Dublin clinic are carried out by a nurse, using top of the range medical grade lasers for maximum safety and efficacy.
How Does Laser hair removal Work?
Lasers work by producing intense light that is absorbed by the melanin, or colour, in a strand of hair. The laser heats up the hair follicle, destroying the hair at its root, without damaging any of the surrounding, lighter skin.
Not to be confused with Intense Pulsed Light, which is better suited to treating skin discolouration; Laser hair removal works by killing off the root of the hair so that it grows back far more slowly or not at all.
The contrast in colour between pale skin and dark hair makes it easy for the laser to target the melanin in the hair follicle. Most Irish people, with our typical pale skin and dark hair, are excellent candidates for Laser treatment.
Some patients may have darker skin, or indeed have pale skin with blonde or red hair. In both these cases, the contrast between skin and hair is reduced; but Slievemore have a specialised laser that allows them to treat people with many differing skin tones and hair colours.
Laser hair removal is a cumulative process, and most people will need about six treatments to destroy the hair follicle. Hair grows in cycles, which is why you need several treatments to kill off the follicles.
Does Laser hair removal hurt?
It certainly doesn’t hurt as much as waxing, or shaving in the cold-nothing is more painful than dragging a razor over goosebumps on a chilly day.
Most people describe the feeling as a ‘hot pinch’ or the snap of an elastic band against the skin, and the laser moves on to a different area after each ‘zap’.
A cooling system is used with the Laser treatment to minimize any minor discomfort, and people with very thick hair might find it a bit more uncomfortable, but most patients tolerate the procedure very well.

Laser Hair Removal for Men
Many male patients have discovered the joy of laser hair removal on unsightly back hair or excessive chest hair; eschewing the furry primate look for smooth, attractive skin.
It’s ideal for men who don’t want to be tied to a regime of regular waxing, or who wouldn’t dream of taking a razor to anything lower than their chin.
Before Treatment
Don’t tan-either real or fake-before any laser treatment, as it impacts the way the laser behaves on your skin. You will need to have a small level of hair growth, so don’t wax or shave before treatment.
