After three children and menopause, Jackie noticed her body had changed in many ways. The most troublesome changes impacted her and her husband’s sex life and eroded her self-esteem.
Jackie didn’t want to accept the pain and dryness she felt as her “new normal.” A friend suggested she look into Juliet, a laser treatment by Cutera that has helped women worldwide improve their vaginal and sexual health.
Juliet laser treatment is a nonsurgical in-office procedure that uses laser technology to:
- Reduce vaginal dryness
- Improve laxity caused by aging and childbirth
- Relieve embarrassment associated with urinary incontinence
“As an OB/GYN, I talk with many women who complain about urinary incontinence when exercising, laughing, and bending over to pick up their babies,” says Samuel Rafalin, MD, an OB/GYN and medical director of Central Park Aesthetique. “I chose the Juliet device to provide a safe and effective alternative for my patients. The majority of them have reported a vast improvement in their overall quality of life.”
What is Juliet?
Juliet is a nonsurgical treatment by Cutera, performed in-office using laser technology to:
- Reduce vaginal dryness
- Improve laxity caused by aging and childbirth
- Relieve embarrassment associated with urinary incontinence
As a practicing Ob/Gyn, Dr. Rafalin has treated patients for more than 20 years. His office, Central Park South Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates, provides comprehensive obstetrical and gynecologic care, including routine and complex prenatal care, gynecology, gynecologic surgery and minimally invasive surgery.
Central Park Aesthetique is the first Manhattan provider to offer Juliet. The medical spa also offers a full suite of noninvasive aesthetic services, including laser hair removal, truSculpt 3D body sculpting and much more.
You don’t have to live with discomfort, a loss of sexual intimacy and dissatisfaction with your appearance. Find out if you’re a candidate for Juliet.
How does Juliet work?
Juliet is a laser procedure. Similar to laser procedures for facial rejuvenation, Juliet delivers light energy to the region to stimulate the production of collagen. More than 80% of the pelvic floor is made of collagen. That’s why Juliet provides so many benefits to the pelvic region.
The special wavelength used for the treatment allows doctors to reach the vaginal layers richest in collagen without damaging surrounding tissue. Because Juliet helps the body generate collagen where it’s needed, it tightens tissue, leading to improved vaginal tone and flexibility. Juliet also helps thicken the vaginal wall and improves moisture and lubrication.
What conditions does it treat?
Juliet treats a wide range of conditions, including:
- Genital itching and irritation
- Vaginal dryness
- Pain during intercourse (dyspareunia)
- Skin pigmentation (dyschromia)
- Stress urinary incontinence
- Relaxation of the vaginal wall associated with childbirth and aging
- Lichen sclerosus (a rare skin condition around the vaginal area)
- Sagging or uneven skin
“I have numerous patients who experience vaginal dryness and pain with sex during and after menopause, hysterectomies, or cancer treatments,” says Dr. Rafalin. “For many women, hormonal creams and other remedies have been unsuccessful or not an option. Juliet gives patients relief without daily maintenance.”

What does it do for urinary incontinence? Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is common in women after their first birth, affecting between 24 to 29% of women. Childbirth weakens the pelvic muscles. Juliet restores the metabolism of connective tissue and restores elasticity and lubrication—sometimes even after the first treatment.
“I started to notice that when I laughed or sneezed I wasn’t urinating,” said one patient. “I almost didn’t notice it because it didn’t happen, but when I realized it wasn’t happening, I was really surprised!”
What can I expect during treatment?
First of all, patients say it’s painless, similar to getting a Pap smear, but with an added warming sensation. During the procedure, the doctor inserts the laser twice to pass over the treatment area. The first pass stimulates collagen production. The second pass remodels tissue, causing new blood vessels and nerve endings to form.
The treatment process takes about 15 minutes. Dr. Rafalin recommends three treatments to achieve desired results. However, don’t be surprised if you notice improvement right away.
“After my first treatment, I have had noticeably less pain during intercourse,” one patient reports. “My partner has also shared that he could tell the difference as well. I no longer feel that I need to avoid intimacy with my partner due to the pain.”
Results will continue to improve throughout the treatment cycle, as your body makes collagen.
What’s the downtime?
You can resume most of your normal activities after treatment. Dr. Rafalin recommends you avoid sexual intercourse and activities such as swimming or sauna for one to two weeks after a procedure.
