I have a very soft brush I used for washing my last RV. It is on an extension arm. What are people using to wash theirs? Specifically with an extension arm.
How often are you waxing it?
thanks

I showed Classic Corvettes for 25 years, won a few trophy's for "best in class" etc. so the show car look I am very familiar with. I know that I am not going to work that hard to get a show car look on my MH that is going to be on the dirty highways the next day. I will have one of the cleanest, shiniest RV's in the park, and will do it the easiest way possible without hours of work. A DI rinse unit has replaced microfiber towels and extension rods. A small pressure washer has replaced changing buckets of water every couple of feet of washing. New Polymers have replaced my expensive show car waxes. Walmarts $9.95 microfiber wash pad is as good at the $50. on line pads. Walmart also has replacement covers for $3.95 available as I travel. In the end, my MH is just as shinny as my show Corvette was and the shine is lasting even longer now with a heck of a lot less work.

I even plumbed the basement where I can wash in a rest area when washing is not allowed in RV parks, which is more often than not.
I do use a light weight extension pole from Lowe's that stores easy in the basement, and reaches the awnings when extended. __________________

Now that is what I was looking for. Have the washer, a foam cannon, will get the Walmart pads...what do you use for detergent?

I use Blue Coral in the gallon jugs at also at Walmart. I keep a smaller bottle in my wash box in the MH. I haven't tried the soap canon yet, but I will try the same soap in it. __________________

Foam cannon should use a specially formulated surfactant specifically designed for foam cannon according to griots garage. __________________

Washing/waxing the coach Actually yes!....bad foam from the foam cannon. I don't understand all the chemistry, but have witnessed the difference in performance. Most auto soaps will not produce the correct rich foam. Most car wash soaps are too viscous and won't draw properly, and if you thin them with water, they underperform. It should coat the coach with a thick "scrubbing bubbles" type foam....not soapy water. It also works much better with deionized water. Bad foam doesn't have adequate cling, it's too heavy, it breaks down really fast and runs off before the surfactants have time to lift the contaminants.... __________________

There was a post a while back that someone used Meguier's car washing soap (also sold at Walmart) in their soap cannon and it worked as good as the high $$ brands.
If the Blue Coral doesn't work in the cannon, I haven't lost anything, I'll pour it in the bucket, still pressure rinse the coach and wash as I normally do.

It's kind of like making your own DI rinse units, you don't know if it's going to work until you try. I'll bet the commercial unit guys will tell me my $5.00 PVC stick DI rinse units won't work.

Here is a true story about soap in car washes. I owned a 5 bay self service car wash for a few years. Along with our regular car wash soap, we added a bottle of "Mr. Bubbles" (a kids bubble bath soap at a buck a bottle) in the soap tank. Customers loved it as it foamed like crazy and they thought their car was really getting clean, it didn't do anything but foam. The regular soap was doing the real cleaning. We loved it as customers spent 3 times as many quarters rinsing the foam off and they kept coming back because we had the "best soap". It was a win-win for everyone and actually the Mr Bubbles was just for show, but the customers were happy. I learned a lot from car washing trade shows on how to market washing products and how to clean cars.

Using your water softener water through the Foam Cannon will make it foam better too. Just like the shower, same soap, but you get more suds when you take a soft water shower. __________________

Applied Rejex on the front cap and windshield a few weeks ago and that stuff is great!

Drove about 530 miles last weekend and eliminated many bugs from the gene pool. When we got to the RV park I didn't have much time so just hooked a hose up to the output connection on the water softener and sprayed down the front and almost all of the bugs rinsed off without even wiping. And that was with low water pressure, have the regulator set at 55 but gauge was reading only 40.

The slogan "Nothing Sticks But The Shine" was very accurate. __________________

All good advice. As for drying, I use the cr spotless rinse. One less step, no drying, hence less chances to scratch the paint __________________

I watched some of the Chemical Guys videos this afternoon showing how to use their water cannons. They showed using the same car wash soap as they use in the wash bucket. I watch three different videos and all were the same solution. An ounce of soap to a bottle of water, warm is better.

palehorse, I watched that video last night along with a few others. Kind of what I thought, store bought works just as well as the soap cannon marketers private label. Along with your results, I will use what I have on hand. Thanks for the link. __________________

Thank you and your posts as well. It was your post of the blank refillable cartridge and eBay resin that got me going on putting together the DI rinse that Doggie Daddy did a year ago

Isn't Meguiars 21 great, thanks Mark!

After watching foam cannon videos I went up to the MH and the low pressure foam cannons will not fit the Harbor Freight pressure washer. The cannons only fit pressure washers with changeable nozzles, my nozzle is adjustable. I will try the little cannon that came with the washer. I don't look for much with it, but you never know

I will order a cannon for my large pressure washer. __________________

I just purchased the chemical guys foam cannon and their snow foam liquid soap and it is really fun to use. The soap goes on very thick and then you allow it to drip down for a couple minutes. This removes dirt. Then shoot it down again and use very light action with a microfiber on a pole. We drew quite a crowd of curious onlookers. Best part is that it was fun and no buckets required. How long after the coach comes off the line should I wait to put the Meguiars 21 sealant on? Should I put a wax on first? What do all of you recommend? __________________

No wax needed. I'm not sure a sealant will adhere to a waxed surface anyway. I would apply asap __________________

Hopefully this link will work. This thread has some excellent info about washing and various products for paint care. There is quite a bit of discussion on how long to wait before applying a paint sealant.

There is an excellent video on Mequiars web site https://www.youtube.com/results?sear...c+sealant+2.0+ of the procedure of using #21. I skipped the claybar, I don't plan on entering my coach in any cars shows. I am from the old school and waited six month for my first wax. Glad I did, my paint as it was curing started bubbling and peeling so I knew it wasn't any wax, or me that caused it. AH! the days of the Classics. Attached Thumbnails

Based on the recommendations here for Meguiars 21, I I just had my local detailer apply it. It turned out great & even detailer said they are going to buy & start using this product on all their jobs in the future. They were using another Meguiar product up until doing my coach.

Guys, I just tried the foam cannon.. wow! That thing sure works.

Chuck, I took the heavy pressure washer from my old unit and adapted it to the light weight hose with the ElCheapo pressure washer, and added my good wand I had bought for my previous washer, that has changeable tips.

The upside is I have around 50' of pressure washer hose so I don't move the actual pressure washer more than once to wash the entire coach. With the pressure washer located near the RH rear corner I can reach around the rear and all the way to the LH front corner. Then I move the pressure washer toward the front a little and do the front cap and RH side.

Also, those downtubes are more than PVC tubes, they have tiny pores smaller than the resin.

Matt, I have been researching adapters for the Harbor Freight pressure washers to fit foam cannons. How To Select a Fitting for the Foam Cannon HP
I have to get my pressure washer and check which fitting it might take. I also saw some at Northern Tool that might work.
But you have given me and idea...I know where the are a few used guns that might work. __________________

Can't believe Betr2Trvl goes to extreme measures to avoid swirl marks in the wash process, them makes off-hand remark about "dry with a towel". IMHO, the average retired bath towel many use for drying cars, boats, RV's etc. poses a greater risk to paint than many of the improper wash-risks described.

Thoughts on drying using natural and/or synthetic chamois, filtered compressed air cannon/jets, microfiber towels, etc.. (bet this lights up an epistle reply from Betr2Trvl! He/she seems passionate in the wash/wax topic!)

A $50. DI rinse unit eliminates any type of manual drying. Spray it and forget it.. __________________

I'm with you on the microfiber wash mitt and pad. I would caution everyone, and I feel like a traitor for doing this, but not all microfiber towels, pads, etc are EQUAL and I don't recommend Walmart microfiber products. I say 'traitor' as I retired from Walmart after a very successful and financially rewarding career (should you be bored I can give you my history with the company from the insiders view). The better microfiber products are available at detailing supply stores/online. As we all know, washing the old RV is nothing like doing the car.

The next part of the process is the "waxing" as most refer to it. Wax does little for protection but makes it look really good. I prefer to use a high quality sealant (like Meguires #21) for protecting the finish. Chemical Guys also sell good sealants. I establish a 'base' by doing a good thorough washing (NO Dawn Ultra 2X - it will strip any protection you have), de-ionized rinse, clay bar cleaning, and then polymer sealant.

I was sold on the polymer products after watching a fellow use it on the black hood of a junked car (hood removed as a demo tool). He didn't even wash the hood, just applied the sealant, and then used an aerosol paint can to spray a line of yellow paint from the unprotected hood to the protected area. This was in Vegas in the summer and it dried instantly. He waited a minute while explaining the product, then took a cloth and wiped over both areas. Unprotected section had a bright yellow streak and the protected area was clean and shinny. Their products are suppose to last about a year but I have one car that is my 'test platform' and it has not been done in over five years. Water beads up nicely when washed. All my other vehicles get resealed every two years or so.

Cleaning anything is not fun in my book. An RV is like punishment. Taking the time to do it right initially will make the periodic washes much easier. I just (literally 10 minutes ago) had the stands, canisters, tubes delivered from Amazon for my DIY de-ionized water system. Will get my plumbing connection pieces this afternoon at Lowes/HD and the resin beads should be delivered tomorrow. With water like we have in Vegas (TDS reading yesterday was 671) this is not a luxury, rather a necessity. Yahoo!

FancyFree, I think it was nice of Betr2travel to compose his post. Just like everything else in life, I take the good and ignore what doesn't work for me.

Not everything I say will work for others 100% of the time either.

I agree that the drying towels can produce some serious issues, so care must be applied to the choice of towel.

Personally, I'm using a number of various sized squeegees and clean soft microfiber towels. I also have a foam pad with hook and loop material I can attach a towel to, then connect to my extension pole in order to reach the hard to reach high spots.

The very best results have been going to a spotless rinse system.

I'm working on improving what I have, and figuring out where to hard mount it prior to our summer trip.

Best Regards,

Thoughts on drying using natural and/or synthetic chamois, filtered compressed air cannon/jets, microfiber towels, etc.. (bet this lights up an epistle reply from Betr2Trvl! He/she seems passionate in the wash/wax topic!)
Only high quality micro fiber towels of course! Shame on me for not clearly stating that. Bath towels on my paint, never.

My detailing cabinet for the cars at home below, which was recently cleaned out....... 2 more bins on the coach for the products and microfiber towels / mitts etc. used on it.

And btw, make sure any labels on any towels etc. you use are completely removed, and don't leave anything in the threads as they can scratch your paint like a razor. If necessary, cut the entire corner / edge off where the label is / was attached.

What I don't like about natural or synthetic chamois is that have no knap, so if you pick up any grit, you just drive it right back into the paint.

I have no problem with using air to dry, but I do like the application of detailing spray as I dry to add a bit of shine as well as the other benefits I noted before. I just don't find drying that big a deal........

I love detailing my cars and RV, and in reality don't expect many folks to take all the care and effort I do in thier cars or RV particalrly. It's kind of like therapy sessions for me (although many of you probably think I need some professional therapy ).

I have a good friend that always asks me when we meet, and he has just detailed his car "OK, get it over with, what's wrong with my car today?." And he takes great care of his cars....

Just try to offer some tips........ It's your expectation that is important, not mine. Attached Thumbnails
