Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area
The Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area includes numerous parks and facilities that are situated close to the Sepulveda Dam. This dam was completed in 1941 to help control winter flooding caused by the Los Angeles River.
Some 2,000 acres include a wildlife reserve where visitors can birdwatch, fish, kayak, and walk. Great Blue Heron, snowy egrets, osprey, and ducks are all frequently observed.
The park serves as a peaceful retreat from some of the city’s more boisterous activities. Picnic tables, a lighted baseball field, and a lighted soccer field are also available for use.
In the mood for boating? Two boat launch access points are available at the North and South Boundaries.
Encino Reservoir
The Encino Reservoir is an extensive manmade body of water that holds 3 billion gallons. Though it has served as a water supply for local residents, modern laws and regulations make it hard for Encino Reservoir to continue serving as a source of drinking water thanks to the high likelihood of contamination.
Even though Encino Reservoir’s days as a reliable source of drinking water are numbered, it’s still a terrific spot to watch the sunset or spend the day in nature. Multiple trails around the reservoir are ideal for walking, hiking, and nature watching.
The Mulholland Drive trail is a popular 7.7-mile trail that offers views of the Encino Reservoir, LA, the ocean, and mountains, along with an overlook of the Nike Missile Site, a remnant of the Cold War that served as a potential last line of defense against Soviet bombers.
Hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and dog walking are all permitted on the Mullholland Drive trail.
Or, bring your fishing gearing and see what you can catch. Largemouth bass, carp, and rainbow trout are a few of the species that anglers enjoy catching out of the reservoir.
