Holiday season is well a truly underway as many of us look forward to trips across the world. But while many people will be relieved to travel anywhere to escape their hectic lives in Britain halfway through 2023, it's fair to say not all destinations were created equal.
The much-anticipated Telegraph Awards have been published for the first time since 2019, setting out all the locations to flock to in 2023. South Africa has awarded the title of the world's best country to visit, but Italy unsurprisingly takes the crown for Europe.
Venice, the quaint city tucked away in north-eastern Italy, appeared to be very popular among Telegraph readers as it was awarded the best city in the continent. Although South Africa isn't a viable option for many of us, you'll be glad to know Venice is simply a two-hour flight away from London.

Built on a group of 118 islands, the Mediterranean city is separated by a series of stunning canals and expanses of open water. This might be what makes Venice most iconic, it's historic architecture is simply a marvel.
Its unique buildings and palaces reflect its role throughout history as one of Europe's key trading hubs. Where the Christian areas of Europe met with Byzantine and Islamic traders, the multi-cultural influence is visible across the city.
Places to visit
The Doge's Palace is simply a must when visiting the beautiful city. It's a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture with art from Titian, Veronese, Tintoretto all on show to visitors.
One of the city's best attractions according to TripAdvisor, the facades of the palace look out over St Mark's Square and the lagoon providing an astonishing view. Tickets cost €25 (£21) if you book a month in advance and €30 (£25) for online purchases made nearer the time.
The Scuola Grande di San Rocco is another place to go for stunning architecture while you can also check out the Cannaregio neighbourhood which houses the oldest Jewish ghetto in the world.
Where to eat and drink
The Prima Volta restaurant boasts the title of Venice's best place to eat according to TripAdvisor. Here the food, service and value have all been ranked five stars, while it also has vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Al Grill is described as a fantastic steakhouse option and Ae Ocha has fantastic pizza and pasta options.
