Covered in gold paint and wearing his Winnipeg Blue Bombers jersey, Jason Bond travelled from Portage la Prairie to Regina, Saskatchewan, for the Labour Day Classic. Bond, otherwise known as @WPGGoldenBoy on X, was in the crowd Sunday at Mosaic Stadium for the 35 –33 win for the Winnipeg Football Team and says it was thrilling to see the Blue and Gold come away victors. "It's even ten times better when you win in their stadium. So, that's what makes the trip even more special: going down there and coming out with two points and taking 1st place in the West. It was a great feeling." The Golden Boy says that as he was leaving the stadium this year, he could feel the Bombers fans carry themselves with that winning swagger. "I'm a 17-year survivor of Labor Day classics, and I've been dressing up as the Golden Boy character for 15 or 16 years. When they see me, most Rider fans like to say hello to me or even ask for a picture. This year was quite amazing because it was both sides that were patting me on the back." While you may have occasionally seen a fistfight between fans of rival teams on the internet, Bond says you get the respect you deserve no matter who you cheer for. "It depends on how you handle yourself, so if you go in there with the going to ‘I hate the enemy’ type feel, then you'll find some trouble, but you will be good if you're happy and respectful. It's just a game in the end." Not a good look, but I believe the man in the @MiltStegallTSN jersey is trying to keep the peace. @MiltStegallTSN has never been in a fight. #PaperPlates https://t.co/eDdcirWIGO — Milt Stegall (@MiltStegallTSN) September 2, 2024 Bond has been on a bus filled with Bombers fans to Regina in the past. However, this year, he had to do a solo trip from Portage to Mosaic Stadium overnight Saturday into Sunday morning. "I got followers on X from coast to coast, and it's really neat even to be coming back to Portage after the game. People know me. They like me, which is also a good thing on my part. We have fun, that's what it's all about. That's what Labor Day is about. And it's like my Christmas." The Golden Boy notes that he used his last bottle of gold paint during the Labour Day Classic, but he plans to pick up eight more bottles before the rematch between the Bombers and Riders for the Banjo Bowl this Sunday.
