We know how swiftly the excitement of getting engaged swiftly morphs into a steely-eyed focus to plan your wedding down to the finest details. There’s so much to think about – from finalising the guest list and picking the venue to finding the dress and booking in those important on-the-day people who will help make your wedding the special day it’s meant to be.
There’s no doubt that your wedding day is one of the truly memorable days of your life – after all, committing to your love is not to be taken lightly. But in trying to make it a wonderful experience for your guests, it can be easy to forget that this day is really about the both of you.
Which means of course, that all eyes will be on you. For those unused to so much attention, the thought of being followed by photographers (and wanna be photogs with an iPhone) all day can cause some angst.
But with a bit of planning and some professional help, you can look as glowing on the outside as you feel on the inside. We’ve put together your 12-month countdown to getting the blushing bride look for the big day.
12 Months Out
Sure it seems like a long way out to start thinking about your skin, but if you’re planning on getting any cosmetic injections, it’s best to start early.
Anti-wrinkle injections can help to smooth out those lines around your eyes and forehead, while giving you younger skin. The more treatments you have, the more dramatic the results will be so plan for three treatments around four months apart in the lead up to your wedding.
8 Months Out
For stunningly smooth pins and a tropical-holiday-ready bikini line the solution is laser hair removal. Laser hair removal gives you permanent hair removal, with less pain and hassle than many other methods. And the best thing? Not having to worry about waxing or shaving when you’re lying on the beach with your new husband.
You’ll need around 6-8 treatments laser hair removal, four weeks apart to ensure a hair free tropical honeymoon.
6 Months Out
If you have specific skin concerns or just want to overhaul your skin care regime, now is the time to schedule a consultation with a professional to develop a tailored treatment plan.
Products like retinoids, AHAs and serums can take a while for results to show so you’ll want to give them the maximum amount of time to get to work on your skin.
Now is also the time to schedule skin smoothing and rejuvenation treatments such as microdermabrasion, laser hair removal or clinical peels for your face to ensure you get in a few treatments before your wedding.
And don’t forget about those other delicate areas of skin. Consider your dress and what other areas of skin are being exposed. Areas like your décolletage, shoulders or back might need extra treatments too over the next few months.
2 Months Out
If you’re considering a new hair colour or style, book in now. If it doesn’t work out, you’ve got enough time to let it grow out or fix without causing major wedding-day ‘do dilemmas.
2-3 Weeks Out
Avoid switching up any of your beauty products at this point in case a new product causes irritation or breakouts. Instead, make sure you’re getting plenty of sleep (difficult we know!) and drinking lots of water. Also focus on eating mostly fresh vegetables and avoid alcohol to prevent bloating (there’ll be enough of that at the wedding).
Stress can also show on your complexion, so book in for a relaxing massage and try to take advantage of all those willing helpers to get those last minute tasks done.
You’ll also book in for your hair and makeup trials at this stage to see how everything will look for the big day. If having a trial, test how it will show up in photographs by having someone take photos with and without flash in the same light conditions as your wedding – such as in the afternoon/early evening light and indoors.
1 Week Out
Have a light exfoliating scrub on your body in preparation for your fake tan (and to leave your skin fresh and glowing).
Avoid any intense skin treatments, but you can use a light eye treatment to reduce puffiness and open up your eyes. Consider booking in for a soothing, hydrating facial to give you soft, glowing skin on the day.
2 Days Out
Arrange to have a light spray tan two days out from your wedding. This is just in case the colour is too dark, you’ll have time to scrub off some of the colour without leaving your skin red raw for your photos.
Protect your tan using a rich body moisturiser, applied after your shower and concentrated especially on your dry spots like your elbows and knees.
The day before!
Get a manicure and pedicure, possibly with gels or shellac so they’ll last through the honeymoon. French tips are the most popular style for brides, but any neutral shade will ensure your hands show off your new ring perfectly.
Try to avoid wearing any makeup today and slather on the sunscreen if you’re outside – you’ve come so far, you don’t want your wedding ruined by sunburn.
Finally, give your lips a light scrub with a dedicated lip scrub in preparation for the “you may kiss the bride” moment.
